Program Name: Maricopa County Hospital, Phoenix, AZ

Date of Interview: 2nd week of Nov

Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: stayed at a friends place so cant say about hotel cost etc

Level of "stress" (0-10): 6 coz I really wanted my interview to go well..otherwise as it was my 3rd Interview, I was very easy as to the interview process 2/10

How many interviewers:2 (2nd interview was a talk with the PD for few minutes)

How many applicants: 6, very organised regarding who goes where to interview with whom

Tour included visits to:wards, ICU, CCU, Clinic, cafetaria

Questions asked: Tell me about yourself, describe work experience I have had, why Phoenix

Happy residents: yes / no / ? : very happy

Atmosphere: Friendly, and the PD is very warm and friendly and instantly puts everyone at ease

City, how is living there?: Quiet affordable, few residents I talked to live anywhere from 15 mts to half hour drive. Area just around the hospital is not very safe to live but if you can live 2-3 miles away, there are very very good areas to live.

Research oriented: yes / no / ? Yes, 1 year ago they made research mandatory part of the program. But it is still laid back I think in terms of not making residents do extensive research as primary focus.

Prematch offers?: Program offers but I was not offered

Visa sponsored?: J1 only

What I liked the most?: Big facility, friendly environment, affliated with Mayo and U of Arizona

What should be improved?: Cant think of anything right now

Rate experience (0-10):9/10 coz I think I will be happy there

Conclusion: Very nice community program, decent cost of living, happy residents

Here I go! Last one! (Hopefully!! rolling eyes )

Program Name: University of Arizona.

Date of Interview: End of January

Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: I stayed at the America's Best Value Inn, this is the adress: 810 E. Benson Hwy. (I-10, exit 262, Park Ave.) Tucson, AZ 85713 It was super cheap (50 dlls with tax) and bought it online at the following website http://www.visittucson.org, there are several deals there depending on what you are looking for. My hotel was really comfortable (it even had HBO and a fridge) and located at less than 5 miles from the UMC (University Medical Center) and at 8 miles from the airport so it was at halfway between the airport and the place of IV. I rented a car, I really recommend this. I made a reservation in expedia with the company named enterprise and the cost for one day of car rental was 15 dlls! a real bargain... with the insurance and taxes I payed less than 50 dlls! I am sure that moving in taxi would've been a lot more expensive and it is nice to have a car in Tucson because although it is not a big city distances are not that small (there are a lot of open empty spaces between things).
To get from the airport to the UMC you have to drive for about 20 mins or so, so it is not that far but I recommend getting a hotel closer to UMC than the airport. There is this hotel which is just in front of UMC and you can actually get there by foot which is called Four Corners but it was 3 times more expensive than the hotel I stayed at so I didn't want to pay as much, but if you are willing to pay for it I think it is a good option.
It took me less than 10 mins to get from my hotel to UMC.

By the way the site of the IV is at the Arizona Cancer Center which is the building on the right when you enter the UMC from Adams st. You have to park at the visitors parking garage, which will be at your left. Parking is for free since the department will give you a pass.

Level of "stress" (0-10): 3

How many interviewers: Only one! Nice!! I was interviewed by one of the faculty, she was part of the ID section and super nice.

How many applicants: About 12. 3 IMG's a German, and Indian and myself. One DO from UA, a couple from U of Illinois, U of Miami, Loma Linda, Rosalind Franklin those are the ones I recall.

Tour included visits to: Both the UMC and the VA. We saw the whole thing in both: wards, ICU's, cafeteria, library, call-rooms, team rooms, ER... at the end of my interview I thought I was seeing double hahaha... oh by the way Tucson VA hospital is the best VA I've ever seen it doesn't even look like a VA.

Questions asked: About my research, why medicine, why UA, if I cared for moving...so on.

Happy residents: yes / no / ? : Very happy

Atmosphere: Very collegial and peaceful, everybody seemed to get along just well.

City, how is living there?: Well.... this might be one of the only setbacks of this program... depends on what you like, your way of life and what you want. It is a small town fells like old Spanish kind of town, very clean and people who live here tend to like the outdoor activities. Weather is nice in the winter and the summer is super hot but I guess you don't really feel it because you expend most of your time indoors. The residents that I talked to said they were really happy living there but they punctualized a lot the fact that if you are single you might have problem finding a nightlife (there is not much of it in Tucson) and little more than half of the residents are married.... sooo if you are married and are an outdoorsie person you will like it a lot... but if you are single, nightlife lover, indoorsie and looking for love this might not be your type of town or you might settle for singlehood until you finish your residency hahaha wink

Good things about Tucson is the very very low cost of living and that it is close to Mexico!! hahaha nod

Research oriented: yes / no / ? There is tons of research going on in all kinds of fields.

Prematch offers?: I did not hear anything about prematches.

Visa sponsored?: Both J and HIB.

What I liked the most?: I thought it is a very complete program. The education system is very well structured, everybody is very nice and supportive of each other. Fellowship opportunities are amazing here and they take most of their housestaff. The hospitals are very nice and clean also.
Oh! Almost forgot: 4 weeks of vacation plus holidays!

What should be improved?: The location! I guess not right? raised eyebrow hahaha Oh well you can take a plane for 40 dlls to Las Vegas and be there in less than an hour a plane to LA and Phoenix for 50 and be there also in less than an hour and a plane for 100 and be in San Diego in an hour and a half and come visit me at TJ!! We could paaartyyy!!! hahaha trying to be positive here guys!! grin

Rate experience (0-10): 10

Conclusion: Great program, I guess only setback is the location. You need to think if this is the right place for you, that is the only decision that I think I will have to make but I will rank it very highly. If it wasn't as close to SD I would not rank it highly but the way I see it is ... yes it is a small town appearantly in the middle of nowhere but I can be in 3 of my favorite cities in little time for little money so it's not that bad wink
