if you shadow your family member for REAL, can you ask your family member to write you a LOR? Will that against any kind of law?? I mean, it is a real observership.

It is. and the LOR could be authentic, but how much weightage will that really carry? I was told against this. SO diverisify in the same set up and ask your relative's coleague if possible.

I agree, it's better than nothing... as long as the attending doesn't have the same last name as you -in that case it may seem a bit fishy. But if that is the only US LOR you can get, go for it!

if the surnames are different, will they even get to know/ask about it? except for the fact that the names are from the same ethnic group, will they even think of a possible relation?
