defect in hartnup's disease is amino acid transportation by therenal and intestinal mucosa is defective hence amino acids r excreted in urine... tryptophan is lost hense deficiency of niacin .....while in pellagra it is the dietary deficeincy of amino acid a negative history for dietary deficiency of tryptophan, in the presence of typical clinical findings should raise the suspicion of Hartnup disease, especially when present in siblings. Chromatographic analysis of the urine usually distinguishes the two

Hartnup -AA tranport of neutral amino acids is impaired in kidney/intestine. Pellagra-deficiency in vitamin/cofactor niacin (B3)
