Program Name: University of Texas at Houston

Date of Interview: End of January

Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: JJMD's apartment again! Thank you!!

Level of "stress" (0-10): 6

How many interviewers: 2. Both of them UT faculty. They also take you to the GME offices which is located in another building in front of the medical school building. You sit in a conference room with one of the GME representatives and they ask for your original documents and certified copies one by one, look at them, return your originals and keep the copies. They take close attention to your transcript an see that you fulfill the 60 hrs minimum for the subjects that the TSBME asks for (i.e. internal medicine, biochemistry, surgery and so on). They fill out a form that says that you showed them all the originals and they kept the copies. You sign something (don't ask me what hahaha there is a reason why I went to medical school and not law school even when my mother is a lawyer!!)... I just signed it hahaha!! (don't tell my mom please!! hahaha grin). After you are done they give you a copy, keep one for their records along with your copies and they also give one for the internal medicine department. After you are done they take you back to the library which is the starting point for all the interviews.

How many applicants: 15. All AMG's from UT houston, UTMB, U of Miami, GW and one from Baylor who was applying for prelim. I also met a girl from Puerto Rico. Only 2 IMG's, one from India and myself.

Tour included visits to: The tour was done in Memorial Hermann hospital only, which is the primary teaching hospital of UT. Tour included wards, ICU's, ER, on-call rooms, residents lounge, cafeteria and library.

Questions asked: Same all. Why IM?, what are you doing after residency? why Houston? why UT? and so on.

happy residents: yes / no / ? : Super happy!

research oriented: yes / no / ? There is a lot of research going on, if you want to help in any research project that is going on at TMC (Texas Medical Center) doors are open, I think that is a great plus.

prematch offers? Noooo!

visa sponsored? J1 only.

City, how is to live there? Don't get me started on this one!! I think I covered it in my other reviews... it's just great to live in Houston, at least it is for me and everyone else I've met.

What I liked the most: The great fellowship opportunities, there is a great Rheumatology program and the atmosphere is very peaceful. The PC's and PA are super nice and helpful also.

What should be improved: Probably morning report, it is not very dynamic for what I have heard and what I saw on my interview day.

Rate experience (0-10): 10*

Conclusion:This program has a lot of potential and a lot of opportunities. It is not a walk in the park, I know that work hours are very intense but I also think that it is worthed. After finishing your 3 years here you will be able to manage all type of patients w/o a problem and also if you want to pursue a fellowship this program offers great opportunities since they take a lot of their house staff. I will rank it very highly because for me it is a combo.
