for effective defecation to occur, the local myentertic reflex that stimulates the contraction must be reinforced by parasympathetic signals that travel to the descending colon, sigmoid, rectum, and anus by the pelvic nerves. These parasympathetic signals intensify the peristaltic waves as well as relax the internal anal sphincter and thus convert the weak myenteric reflex to a powerful process of defecation.

Concept tested: slow wave per se is not sufficient for intestinal propulsion.
