A patient is in a coma and according to the doctors, she'll never regain consciousness again. The son comes in with a living will, dated 3 weeks ago which says DNR. The daughter comes in with a power of attorney paper, signed by the patient 3 years ago, allowing her to take decisions for the patient. What do you do? Pull the plug or let her live on artificial oxygenation?

You're both correct but sk I think that she had also said in the living will that if she was in a similar situation, to go ahead and pull the plug. However, the explanation was that power of attorney has power over living will because power of attorney symbolizes the patient himself/herself talking.

I would go with the living will coz it is the person deciding for himself

Bela...one thing that confused me was that.....the living will was given three weeks back and the power of attorney was given three years back.....So looking at the time frame wouldnt you want to go along with the living will??? or is the power of attorney ALways given preference...?

sk, I got that question wrong. And I was upset b/c of the dates. Apparently the mom had given her daughter power of attorney 3 years ago b/c mom was sick at the time. But she came out ok. A week earlier, she had written a living will but that means nothing. I mean, dates mean nothing. Bottom line according to their explanation is: Power of attorney always over-rides Living Will.

Nice discussion.....I missed that question also, but Bela is right! At least for the step 1 go with the power of attorney....get the question wrong
