I prep for GRE now and kinda confused which program to choose, mph or phd. I am keen of surgery or ob/gyn though acknowledged how competitive these fields are and how narrow the door will be in the coming years. phd seems much more academic and maybe most programs prefer to mph, but phd takes like 5 yrs while mph is just 2 or 1.5 yrs. what wud you guys choose?

I would suggest that MPH is a better bet, because for a Phd, it is not just a matter of getting the admission, but one has to be really committed to it, as it is a long and arduous journey, stressful too. One has to be ready for the research to not go as planned, be ready for the ups and downs, and if your heart is in clinical practice, its better you get into it sooner than later..... With an MPH, you would have the flexibility to try studying for the steps side by side (not full time, but at least 2 hrs a day) but with Phd, its very hard to get that kind of time, as you will be busy with research or course work. You might even be able to get a job with the MPH but with Phd, you have to do a post doc position first before you get set up with your own lab or be a faculty member. Ultimately its where you wanna be: in clinical practice, or academics. Just my thoughts..might wanna check around....Good luck ..once you make your decision, you gotta live with it and be happy

If you can do a phd in an institution that has residency programs and you can do your doctoral research related to your area of interest, i.e., ob/gyn or surgery, and work with physicians incl. pd overthere, then you will have a much better chance for getting into residency after that, provided they see your good works and your determination. With MPH, you won't have that opportunity. So, it's less likely you will be able to make connections with people in residency programs. Here in the US, connection is golden! So, think about it.

yeah, I love clinic stuff, I like dealing with people. I did seriously 6month research about myocarditis and really enjoyed myself, ofcourse when the results were as my expected. but sometimes I felt so overwhelming and the long, arduous journey to go through really dampened me. Thanks alot for your input. I ll apply for phd in basic science like immuno, infection... because I cant find any clinical research. anyways mph will be my back-up plan.

PhD can be done in 4 years. Some people even did it in 3+ years. Of course all depend on your research area.
