Expl:
How patients are managed with genetic screens depends on their risk factors. African Americans are at an increased risk of carrying the sickle-cell disease and thalassemias. They are not at increased risk for cystic fibrosis; however, CF testing is now offered to all women during their prenatal care. The expanded maternal serum a-fetoprotein ( MSAFP) that is used to screen for neural tube defects and Down syndrome is also offered to all women. Invasive prenatal diagnosis with amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS) is offered only to those women of advanced maternal age or who are known to be at high risk for chromosomal or other genetic anomalies (e.g.,balanced translocations). If patient and her partner are known to be carriers of thalassemia, sickle-cell anemia, or cystic fibrosis, an amniocentesis should be performed to diagnose the fetus. Further, if MSAFP was positive for a risk of either chromosomal abnormality or neural tube defect, an amniocentesis can be performed to confirm or rule out these diagnoses. (OB/GYN, Blueprints)
