Conclusion:21 postions, they offer prematches to FMGs but fmgs wouldnt be ranked, either you take the prematch or consider it a lost effort. No in-house fellowships but They say they make every effort in placing you where ever you wnat to be. They seem to have great interest in the residents career path which i found most unique about this program.

Program Name: SUNY Health Sciences

Date of Interview: January

Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: Stayed at a hotel in Manhattan and then took the subway.

Level of "stress" (0-10): 2

How many interviewers: 2 - 1 quick one with the PD then a longer one with a faculty member

How many applicants: Around 14 or so

Tour included visits to: ICU, ER, Wards, Cafeteria, etc anywhere we asked basically. Only in Downstate and Kings County though

Questions asked: Tell me about yourself, future plans, describe a case you've seen, relaxed.

happy residents: yes / no / ? : Yes

research oriented: yes / no / ? Not for residents though you can use an elective for it.

prematch offers?

visa sponsored? Didn't ask.

City: Brooklyn

What I liked the most: Relaxed program.

What could be improved: Maybe its a bit too relaxed.

Rate experience (0-10): Mixed

Conclusion: The program appears to be rapidly improving due to the efforts of the chairman and Conrad Fischer in particular. Most of the older reviews that you'll find are probably out of date now so I would suggest trying to get first hand info. They seemed to be selling it pretty hard though.

Was I that quietshocked? It must have been jet lag (I had just completed a 21hr journey the afternoon before). The fact that I had lost my voice a few days earlier didn't help matters eithergrin.

She did...and I didn't know anyone either. It is a pretty standard question though, so far I've got it at some point in all of my interviews....and my answer is always no.

ok thanx!

1st time in 10 ivs was i asked this one!......and i was like ......huh?.......

Program Name: St. Luke's - Roosevelt

Date of Interview: January

Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: Stayed at a hotel near Times Square and took the subway.

Level of "stress" (0-10): 1

How many interviewers: 2

How many applicants: About 7 -10 at each site

Tour included visits to: The usual places at both hospitals including the housing

Questions asked: Basic interview questions - tell me about yourself etc. Nothing even remotely medical

happy residents: yes / no / ? : Yes although they did have some concerns

research oriented: yes / no / ? Opportunities are available.

prematch offers? I don't think they offer.

visa sponsored? Don't know

City: Manhattan

What I liked the most: Guaranteed housing, good fellowship placements

What could be improved: Ancilliary services, electronic records

Rate experience (0-10): 8

Conclusion: Its a good program. Nobody could really defend the "drip" system and I don't think they really like it. You'll be living in Manhattan which is a plus.

Program Name: Maimonides Medical Center

Date of Interview: January

Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: Stayed in Manhattan and took the subway. The station is very close to the hospital.

Level of "stress" (0-10): 2

How many interviewers: 1 interview (with a faculty member and a third year resident)

How many applicants: 12

Tour included visits to: Wards, ICU, library, cafeteria, etc

Questions asked: What are you looking for in a program, etc No medical questions.

happy residents: yes / no / ? : I think so

research oriented: yes / no / ? No

prematch offers? No

visa sponsored? Not sure

City: Brooklyn

What I liked the most: They have a lot of fellowships.

What could be improved: The call schedule amongst others

Rate experience (0-10): 6.5 (This is purely my experience and not necessarily a reflection of the program)

Conclusion: Its a decent program I guess. At least thats what everyone tells me. I found the area rather depressing once I got out of the subway station and everything went downhill from there.

  #67

Program Name:Brooklyn hospital center

Date of Interview:Nov 2007

Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc:I stayed at Lavasoft hostel which do not recommend to anybody, too noisy, I could not sleep at all.

Level of "stress" (0-10):6-7

How many interviewers:2 one with faculty one with the chief resident, both in the afternoon(after lunch)

How many applicants:20

Tour included visits to:Icu, wards, emergency room,.....

Questions asked:medical questions, I was asked about the electrolyte problems in chronic vomiting and the step by step management of a tachyarrythmia

happy residents: yes / no / ? :not at all, a few of them(those in contact with applicants tried to pretend, but all the residents seemed anxious and overwhelmed)

research oriented: yes / no / ?no

prematch offers?yes, they offered me but I did not accept

visa sponsored?yes

City:New York, Brooklyn

What I liked the most:PD and PC were nice peple with new ideas, the program has received a probation notification and they will have another evaluation in 1-2 years, so they changed many house stuff, new PD, P chair and P coordinator. high diversity of patients.

What could be improved:lots of thing, overwhelming residency, very busy hospital, lots of scutwork, only nephrology fellow opportunity there, not friendly relationship between residents and nurses...a typical public hospital of New York

Rate experience (0-10):1, the worst program I have every had interview at!

Conclusion:I won't rank the hospital, the probation problem seems risky making us desperate in the middle of nowhere in a few months, but you will see lots of pathologies and have to manage every patient, so great confidence as an internist, but you will suffer for sure.

Program Name:Wilson Medical Center(United health services)

Date of Interviewgrinec 2007

Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc:Hotel La quinta close to the hospital(not walking distance) provided by the program

Level of "stress" (0-10):2

How many interviewers:3, one with PD, one with Program coordinator, and one with program manager(!!!new powerful position there)

How many applicants:2

Tour included visits to:hospital housing(subsidized with a reasonable price), Cities nearby(Binghamton and Johnson city and the PC talked about fun activities nearby, shopping malls, etc. ICU, ward, ER, Library, call rooms...

Questions asked:very typical questions we prepared for interview, your strength, weak points, long term goal, problem in your medical school, why you selected medicine, why internal medicine, .....

happy residents: yes / no / ? :yes, I believe all were IMG

research oriented: yes / no / ?not at all, a very small program basically focused on job, I felt as if it is a purely job interview!

prematch offers?yes, mostly, they have only 1 position left for match!!!!

visa sponsored?yes

City:Johnson city close to Binghamton, Ny(4 hour far from New York city), I think teh average age of the city was 60!!!mostly elderly, in both hospital and the city

What I liked the most:friendly environment, they respected the applicants and were very nice to us, gave us goody bags and then sent thank you notes, happy residents and good food provided in different seminars, lectures. noticeable benefits(housing, good salary compared to the small city expenses)

What could be improved:not academic, morning report and noon conference not that educational, not research oriented, if you are looking for a fellowship you will definitely have to work so hard, not great reputation, many people never heard of this hospital! few residents(8-10) so you can not be covered easily if needed.

Rate experience (0-10):4

Conclusion:a good hospital if you want to become a PCP, don't come here if you wanna fellowship, or care about education so much. most people were really nice.

Program Name: Mount Sinai Elmhurst center

Date of Interview: Dec 07

Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: at a friend's place in Long Island, not so close, subways were convenient

Level of "stress" (0-10):3

How many interviewers:1 faculty, it was the most professional interview I have every had, she read my resume so carefully and asked thoughtful and precise questions about them!

How many applicants:16

Tour included visits to:ICU, wards, ER, call room

Questions asked:interesting case I had back in my country, in my observership, common internal problems I saw back in my country and how I managed it, details about every thing I mentioned in my resume, such as team work workshop and case discussion series. as I said most precise interview in this season.

happy residents: yes / no / ? :seemed kind of happy, bust though

research oriented: yes / no / ?no

prematch offers?yes, I was not offered

visa sponsored?I don't know

City:New York, Queens, poor people mostly hispanic patients, you see many patients unable to speak English!

What I liked the most:nice house stuff and respectful, high diversity of patients, precise interview(some applicants were asked medical question, but not me)

What could be improved:low chance for fellowship, very busy hospital and overwhelmed residents, language barrier(spanish) could be a problem

Rate experience (0-10):6-7

Conclusion:an acceptable hospital to become a PCP, affiliated by Mount Sinai, so there is some chance of getting fellow there. neighborhood not so safe, but good enough, I will rank this program in the middle.
