Yeah I agree. Everyone gives Kingsbrook a bad rep, but in reality.....they're one of the few hospitals in NYC that are TRYING to get better. Computerized charts, beautiful benefits package, and the opportunity to do many procedures is just some of the perks. Of course, the downside is the area in which the hospital is situated, and the emphasis that you have to learn on your own and not too much effort is put forth by faculty to teach. Although you are supervised in all aspects of the program. I might just rank this program (albeit low) just because the residents there are trying to improve the future outlook for this program. It has a good salary, and may be a good learning experience. We will see. Good luck on the rest of your interviews.

No...(depends if you are interested) prematch offers? Used to offer Prematch...This year, it seems difficult no prematches given so far. visa sponsored? H1 City: Bronx What I liked the most: Recently got taken over by Montefiore Health system. What could be improved: Whats the use of MCQs Rate experience (0-10): 5 Conclusion: Good program, serve some suburbs of yonkers too along with typical bronx patient population....Have night float although interns participate. MCQs arent difficult compared to the kind of exams we have taken but my knowledge was a little Rusty. If you have taken Step 2 or 3 recently you can score pretty high.

You won't have to push patients in wheel chair or do blood work. Overall good program.

Program Name: NYU Bellevue Medical Center Date of Interview: late Oct. Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: I live in Manhattan Level of "stress" (0-10): 3 How many interviewers: 3 How many applicants: 9 Tour included visits to: Main campus, inpatient and outpatient parts ( outpatient clinic are filled with antique and classy rugs which make them so un-professional), NYU medical school Questions asked: Self-introduction, How much time to prepare for all 3 USMLE steps, Introduce ur country( I met a guy who majored in East Asia History in college, so he spent exclusively 20 minutes chatting with me on that topic), research focus, what u wanna learn in this program, see urself in 20 yrs happy residents: yes / no / ? : Yes, but not bcz of the program. It's bcz of Manhattan. The female residents dress so fashionable as a whole. research oriented: yes / no / ? Yes, since it's university program, but the pt volume is so so big (the tertiary center of whole lower Manhattan) that most residents dont have tome to publish paper. Only abstracts and projects mostly. prematch offers? I believe u ve read my other post on this program visa sponsored? J1 City: Manhattan What I liked the most: Good name. High quality of clinical teaching. Manhattan. Near Wall street, so u probably have some really high-profile patients. Strong outpatient geriatrics. What could be improved: No electives in other hospitals Rate experience (0-10): 9 Conclusion: A very popular program among AMG. I know it's so good, but I just dont have that kind of "click-in" feeling. Since I have no problems in fellowship now, I would probably rank it under some good community programs. But if u get a chance to iv there and u wanna do competitive fellowship, try to shine there by showing ur research abilities. They like it. GL.

Program Name: NYMC Westchester Medical Center Date of Interview: mid Nov Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: drove there Level of "stress" (0-10): 5 How many interviewers: 1 How many applicants: 20 Tour included visits to: medical floors, ICU, cafeteria, ER, call rooms Questions asked: personal questions and a case mgt question..but mostly the other applicants got only personal qs from their interviewers happy residents: yes / no / ? : they seemed happy research oriented: yes / no / ? YES prematch offers? no visa sponsored? H1 City: Valhalla, NY What I liked the most: well prepared and organized interview day--all were present from Chief of medicine (who authored around 8 books and is editor of several journals!),PD, deputy PD, to chief res and some residents--faculty seemed really dedicated to the program and its residents.....education was emphasized...they offer almost all subspecs for fellowship--they usually take their own.. What could be improved: Rate experience (0-10): 8 Conclusion: a university program with good opportunity for fellowship and research, located in nice (although costly) suburb area...in NYMC campus -- teaching is priority...not sure about patient mix esp since location is almost in white plains..but still level 1 trauma center and they get referrals/transfers from all over the region

Program Name: Metropolitan Hospital Date of Interview: Mid november Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: I stayed at the wanderers Inn east. Really good hostal. You can get a private room with 2 beds for 100 bucks and if you are lucky as I was you can get a private restroom. Really close to the hospital (about 2 blocks) and a block away from the 96th street subway station which is a real plus. 3 blocks from central park also. They offer breakfast which was also really good (the hospital won't give you a glass of water so you will need to have a breakfast!). They were also very nice and stored my luggage for the IV and the morning that I arrived before the check in time while I went out for a walk around NY. This is the website: http://www.wanderersinn.com/ I used the subway from the instant I arrived NY. Subways in manhattan are ok but the subway that connects the JFK with manhattan is really scary nevertheless it does its work and it is cheap. The route to get to the hostal is this: airtrain from any terminal of JFK to jamaica station. Transfer to E (blue line) towards manhattan. Transfer at 53 st/lexington to 6 subway uptown (green line). Down at 96 st. Walk one block and you will be at the hostal and 2 blocks and you will be at the hospital. As I said Subways in manhattan are really good. You can buy a metrocard and just add money to it, there are several self-use machines in which you can add by cash or my credit card which I thought was very convenient. I totally recommend the subway for transportation all over manhattan. It is very quick and safe. I'm a 25 year-old girl and had no problem with it and never felt threatened even at 9 pm. Also very difficult to get lost since there are a thousand signs that point you to the right direction. Level of "stress" (0-10): 1 How many interviewers: 1 How many applicants: About 10. All IMG's. Mostly latinamericans. One peruvian, one from ecuador, costa rica and me and a friend of mine both mexicans. One girl came from the phillipines. I also met a guy from India and from Nigeria. Those are the ones I recall. Tour included visits to: Very poor tour. Only included the units and one of the floors. Questions asked: Terrible IV. It includes medical questions which I think is a waste of time. They should spend time trying to meet me as a person and getting to know if I'm someone they could trust instead of asking stupid questions that have already been asked a thousand times in the USMLE's and WAY BETTER!!! oH WELL... They asked about the classic 5o something lady totally asymptomatic, had no PMH was on no meds you conduct a routine w/u and found everything NL except for a hypochromic microcytic anemia. She denies having any bleeding that she knows of and she has a guaic -. what would you do or what do you think about this case? Second case was a 60 something male that had an ischemic stroke one week ago with secondary hemiplegia who was on aspirin and on rehab. You are consulted because all of the sudden he developed tachycardia with nl BP. somebody gave him a BB. They asked: what do you think about this consult? was the use of the BB a good call? Don't count on this cases because each one of the applicants had different cases. Some of them told me they had a case of acid-base and they asked them the classic LA MUD PIE and also causes of NL AG metabolic acidosis. Also some had questions about DKA, management of hyperkalemia and PE with inconclusive V/Q scan. As I said terrible questions. About me? they asked how do I see myself in 10 years, what are my future plans and they asked an illegal question: if I'm married....as I said terrible IV. happy residents: yes / no / ? : They seem happy research oriented: yes / no / ? Not much. supposelly you can do some research BY YOURSELF (mostly statistics) , they say that they give you space to do it but they have nothing going on in this hospital. prematch offers? Yes. visa sponsored? j1, h1B City: NY... No comments.... I guess it's a matter of taste because I know a lot of people that love it but I did not like it at all. I just don't see myself living in NY for 3 years. What I liked the most: The applicants. I had a blast talking to some of them. It was funny because it is such a small world each one of the latin american applicants knew someone that I knew... I thought it was amazing! coming from such different countries and having something in common! I also thought the hostal was very good and I recommend it. I also recommend the subway in manhattan which is incredibly cheap, easy to use, fast, safe and convenient. What could be improved: A lot of things Rate experience (0-10): 2 Conclusion: If you want a community hospital in manhattan with the possibility of staying and work here you'll be very happy . P.S. This is obviously just my opinion!!! sorry for being excessive... it happens sometimes!! I'll be a good girl now I promess!

GLO MD, I m sorry about your experience. I dont like NY at first when I first moved here from Boston. Felt so dirty and unsafe then. However, since I was brought up in a similar metropolitan, I find myself get used to NYC quite soon. Now I dont wanna leave here.

Program Name: NYU downtown Date of Interview: late Nov Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: I live in Manhattan Level of "stress" (0-10): 0 How many interviewers: 2 How many applicants: 14 Tour included visits to: Ward, Cafe, ICU, Library, the famous 911 ER, telometry Questions asked: How many different Chinese languages do u speak? How good is your English? Why our hospital? Future goal? If I invite u to come, r u interested? Do u apply to other places? (The first iv was actually done in Mandarin) happy residents: yes / no / ? : Generally, yes. research oriented: yes / no / ? No, but they have a clinical scholar program, and if u fulfill the requirement, they can put u in that program, and starting from PGY2, u ll have a diff. rotation schedule. prematch offers? Yes, especially if u can speak both Mandarin and Cantonese. If u know Fukinase as well, u ll secure a position automatically(I doubt anyone beside me). visa sponsored? H1 for step3>90. Otherwise J1. City: Lower Manhattan, the CENTER of the WORLD! What I liked the most: About 85% patients are Chinese, so I feel like home here(The other 15% r mostly suit guys from Wall street). Subsidized housing in a nice nearby apt(pay like 400 for studio, 600 for one-bedroom in lower Manhattan!). Mandatory rotation in Sloan-K Memorial for 3 months. Nice faculty. Totally No overnight call(even no for Fri. and Sat.)!!! Great AMG/IMG ratio(2:3). 100% board passing rate. The location beats all hospitals in NYC. U see all famous NYC buildings around. PDA for every one. Computerized system. What could be improved: No formal morning meeting. Laid-back program(most have only 6 to 7 patients in hand). Hospital is old(and if u r not used to Chinese hospital design, u wouldnt like it). No cath lab. Rate experience (0-10): 9 for me. It's my top choice for community program. (But for non-Chinese speakers, I really dont recommend u to come as u ll have a hard time taking history and finding translators) BTW, during the chat, I met an applicant asking if I am mph on this forum

Yes, it's used to affiliate with NYU, now it's affiliated with Cornell and Columbia. It's what I heard from my countryman, one of the 2 interviewers, about the visa. I think they dont really follow strict laws about visa. So u can always try. If they like u, they take whatever u ask for.

Speaking 2 or 3 Chinese languages is not hard. It's like many Europeans know 3 or 4 languages of Latin origin.

Hi doctors I posted this Q in a thread but didnt get any answer, could u please hlp me: I found in the site of the Albany College of Medicine the following: http://www.amc.edu/Academic/GME/residency/Interna... "New York State mandates that you do not spend more than 12 weeks of elective time outside of your medical school country while enrolled as a student (prior to receiving your medical degree). If you have spent more than 12 weeks away from your medical school country, you are ineligible for training in New York State." Anybody faced this problem . I'm currently a medical student and I'm scheduling for 3 months of electives and I did 2 months of electives in the UK as a medical student. does it mean I cant apply to NY in the next match??? I know that NY is IMG friendly. and its ridiculous to lose this chance just because I have a good US experience!!!!
