Program Name: Metropolitan Hospital

Date of Interview: Mid October

Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: I took metronorth and subway....access easy if you take the subway and stay on lexington 96 st station. ...It's about 2 blocks from the hospital

Level of "stress" (0-10): 2

How many interviewers: 1

How many applicants: 4

Tour included visits to: ICU, wards, call rooms.

Questions asked: goals, plans in 10 years, etc. some politics, 2 medical questions, not too complicated..(one about prevention....and the other about the next step on a neck mass) probably not to asses knowledge...maybe they are interested in the thought process. No case presentation.

happy residents: yes / no / ? : yes (opportunity to talk with 2 residents)

research oriented: yes / no / ?: no

prematch offers? yes

visa sponsored? h1/j1

City: NYC!!!

What I liked the most: The associate program director is a very nice person. You will probably get a good training, unfortunately you don't have too many electives, and no rotations outside....so it's hard to get contacts for fellowship. If interested in primary care it seems like a good place to be. Very convenient housing. good computarized system. NYC, so a wide variety of pathology, but "not so busy" as residents mentioned.

What I did not like:Not research oriented. Residents have to buy their own food around the hospital. Did not have an opportunity to see academic activities....housestaff where taking some monthly test. We also had to fill a new form with information about our medical school, Usmles, letter writers, etc.. I believe that information is already on our CAF... there must be some reason I guess...

Rate experience (0-10): 6-7

Conclusion: It's a community hospital affiliated to NYMC in an old building, but clean.. 3-4d year medical students rotate there...... mostly hispanic and AA patients. Spanish is a plus...but not a must..probably 1/3 of the residents speak spanish. Location of the hospital is ok, upper east. If interested in primary care I believe you'll have a good training. If interested in a fellowship you will have to work hard to get some publications. they are honest in telling you that if research is what you are looking for, then this is probably not the best place for you. Their fellowship placement is about 50% though. not specified where people go...just a couple of examples. Most people get H1 visas, with which is also harder to get fellowships.

thanks kykie. Definately yes, but maybe more love now that I am not spending $$$$$ on rent. I could meet with a couple of friends including the guru....So I had a great time.

I forgot to mention, the interview is brief (mine ended about 11:30am) so you'll have your afternoon to enjoy the city....

good luck on your interview warwick! Just in case you get the same questions: the answers are colonoscopy and FNA.... I believe there's no medical questions if a preliminary candidate.

Program Name: Rochester General Hospital

Date of Interview: Early Nov.

Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: The program paid for a night at Holliday Inn Airport, plus dinner, plus city tour

Level of "stress" (0-10): 1

How many interviewers: 2

How many applicants: 18-20

Tour included visits to: ER, ICU, CCU, Library, Lounge room.

Questions asked: relaxed…non stereotypical questions…. Interviewers will review your CV and talk about it….great interviews.

happy residents: yes / no / ? : Yes, dinner gave us the chance to look at this part.

research oriented: yes / no / ? yes, mostly clinical, everybody has to complete a research project. Very evidence based medicine oriented.

prematch offers? They fill about half the positions through prematch.

visa sponsored? J1 / H1

City: it’s a nice small city, full of trees, close to Canada. Affordable living.

What I liked the most: The Program Director seems very friendly, knowledgeable, supportive.

What could be improved: I believe it has the best of a community program.

Rate experience (0-10): 8-9

Conclusion: I really liked the program. I believe most of the residents are from India and Pakistan. I liked the atmosphere. Good teaching, research opportunities, away electives. Decent fellowship placement.
It’s a nice +- 500 bed hospital. There’s something called “majoring” where you can spend more time on the clinics you are most interested in.

thanks prueba.. i am not interviewing there but the description you gave about the interview experience was too good.. thanks and good luck buddy..

Program Name: Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center

Date of Interview: early November

Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: commute

Level of "stress" (0-10): 5

How many interviewers: 2 asking questions simultaneously (MEDICAL Q's !)

How many applicants: 10

Tour included visits to: general hospital tour by chief resident

Questions asked: They gave each applicant a card with a clinical scenario. Your job.......make up a case and present to program director and resident. Cases that were given: (sickle cell crisis, subarachnoid hemorrhage, acute renal failure, hypoglycemia, etc. etc.). You are given 20 minutes to prepare case, although we were ignored for 1 HOUR ! The entire interview lasts only 2-3 minutes. You go in, they verify some info about your background, then tell you to present case. Many interruptions in between, and at the end you walk out scratching your head.

happy residents: yes / no / ? : Yes and No.

research oriented: yes / no / ? NO, although research is required for every year that you're there. But no time given for it. Do it on your own.....it's a requirement.

prematch offers? yes

visa sponsored? no.

City: Brooklyn, NY. One of the worst parts of Brooklyn too.

What I liked the most: Chief resident was very honest, and so was PD. Basically told us that if you're looking for fellowship, dont come here. If you have other options, dont come here. If you like research and want extensive teaching from faculty, dont come here. Honest people. Residents are very nice and very open. Chief resident bought us lunch with his OWN money. Said program does not want to pay for it. However, the PD is a bigshot that is up-tp-date on whatever is required for accreditation. Kingsbrook is 5-year accredited. Patient load is max, but you will learn because of it. Patient diversity is great. And some parts that should be busy eg ER are not so much, so plenty of opportunities to do procedures.

What could be improved: Seems like the program uses its residents. You only get what you put in. If you just want to get by, you will........but that doesnt necessarily make you a good doctor.

Rate experience (0-10): 5

Conclusion: If you search the many many reviews about this hospital, the consensus is to stay away. Although I could understand that this program is a no-no, there are some perks. The benefits package is probably the BEST in the country. I think PGY-1 makes $53,000, and chief told us he expects a 3.8% raise by next year. Insurance, dental, etc. is all covered. Parking is free. They give you yearly allowances for software, PDA, and boards review, etc. And 30-50 dollars weekly for cafeteria food, so you're never hungry. The BEST part is that they are one of few hospitals in New York City that has COMPUTERIZED charts. And they expect to make progress notes via dictation soon enough.

What I didnt like is that there is no ICU/CCU in first year. So after 1st year, if you decide to leave............no way ! Programs will notice this deficiency in your application and wont take you. In essence, once your in Kingsbrook, you're stuck there forever !

I would rank this program only because it seems like the residents are trying to make changes. They have a very strong union, and are always trying to fight for their rights and privileges. And they do win most of the time. Computerized charts, good learning (if you put in the effort), and comraderie are some perks about this program. You definitely have a chance to learn, but again........no links to university, so no outlook for fellowship (although residents do go on to fellowship there).

Good luck.

Program Name: Kingsbrook Jewish medical center

Date of Interview: 2nd wk of Nov

Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: took the subway

Level of "stress" (0-10): 3

How many interviewers: 2

How many applicants: 10

Tour included visits to: medical floors, ICU, cafeteria, ER, conference room

Questions asked: yr graduated, clinical experience after graduation
after that they will ask you to present an imaginary/made-up case,
based on the diagnosis that they will assign to you...it wont take you
more than 5mins, i swear

happy residents: yes / no / ? : didnt see them much; the chief res was pretty much
happy..but he kept saying during our tour that a univ
is better anyday, and that we should explore other options
before considering the place...

research oriented: yes / no / ? NO

prematch offers? yes

visa sponsored? GC only

City: brooklyn

What I liked the most: the chief res who gave the tour was very honest about the hospital, he didnt sell the place to us like a used car salesman...he gave us the pros and cons of the program...the program is fully accredit for the next 5yrs....labs and orders can be accessed from the computers anywhere from the hosp....benefits/salary are the highest ive seen so far ...applicants that i met during the IV were all very friendly and we got along so well, that actually made the IV worthwhile...

What could be improved: a lot...and the mean, power tripping secretary who briefed us should be the first to change.....

Rate experience (0-10): 3

Conclusion: its a small community hosp in downtown brooklyn, the area didnt seem safe, with no research opportunity...comparably less stressful work than other NY hospitals...but i wiil consider other programs before this....might not rank this program
