COPIED FROM GINKO'S EXPERIENCE.

Program Name: Harbor, Baltimore

Date of Interview: october 2007

Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: drove there, stayed around airport(8 miles from hospital)

Level of "stress" (0-10): 3

How many interviewers: 2

How many applicants: 10-11(1 AMG, rest IMG)

Tour included visits to: morning report, directors round, library, ER, ICU, cafeteria..

Questions asked: year of graduation, medical school/region, interest(primary care vs research), if i had any qs..nothing challenging..seems to me it was an exercise to assess how long and lucidly i can SPEAKA ENGLISH.

happy residents: yes / no / ? : yes...if they were putting a happy face, they were extremely good at that

research oriented: yes / no / ? not much, helps in getting electives at hopkins...have an entire floor taken over by National Institute of Aging

prematch offers? Y

visa sponsored? H1

City: Baltimore

What I liked the most: academic atmosphere..they have the best ABIM passing rates in MD..

What I did not like: not much really to complain about..would consider this Program over many others..but they should allow more interactions with other residents...on my day they appeared to have vanished after morning report..but then they might have other stuff to take care of..like attending patients

Rate experience (0-10): 6.5

Conclusion: dont rush into prematch unless u objectively know that ur chances are slim elsewhere..

i guess I wrote it incorrectly, I meant to say there were 16 other applicants with me on the same day.

Actually only 2 faculties interviwed me that too seperately. They were really nice!

Program Name:JHU/Sinai

Date of Interview: October 2007

Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc:Radisson- split with an IV buddy thanx to the forum

Level of "stress" (0-10):?3(how much stressed I felt)

How many interviewers:2- actually one IV main-other was very brief meeting with PD

How many applicants:?20 odd- felt like too many when we started but the rest of the day was very well organised that I felt that I got enough time- Of course the downside was that 3-4 different Faculty interviewed the applicants- might have been easier/tougher compared to other applicants on the same day

Tour included visits to:Cafeteria, wards, ICU + attended grand rounds

Questions asked:Usual stuff- tell me about urself; why Sinai; Future plans- we also had to write down some the stuff

happy residents: yes / no / ? :yes- at least the 3-4 that I met

research oriented: yes / no / ? Yes

prematch offers? didnt offer me

visa sponsored? J1

City:Baltimore

What I liked the most:Very good fellowships after completing here- considering that there are 70-80% IMGs is impressive-residents and faculty seem to interact quite well- had a good 'community' feeling to the program not like some huge program where the PD does not know most of the residents-

What I did not like: City seems a bit weird-Not very safe

Rate experience (0-10):8 (would have been 9 if not for the city)

Conclusion: as the Intern put it- As an IMG you have almost no chance of making it to JHU- This is one of the best JHU affliates that an IMG can get- what convinced me of this was that they had many residents going to Cardiology all over the US and the Chief resident was going to mayo for endocrine

They have a very strong endocrine division. Actually they are on USnews best hospitals for endocrinology....

  #19

gingko...did harbor make u the prematch offer right away? ie on the day of the interview? any idea about the credentials of the other candidates who interviewed with you?

  #20

Program Name: JHU/Sinai

Date of Interview: november 2007

Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: DAys hotel..$65/night..decent place but didnt have toothpaste so had to walk out in the cold at 10PM n get it from a 7/11..there's a chili's right next to it n a bob evans restaurant across the street..

Level of "stress" (0-10): 6 (first interview so i was a lil stressed)..7 by the end of it as i wasnt offeerd a pre-match n i was sorta expectin it..

How many interviewers: 1 interviewer n a brief meeting with the PD

How many applicants: 16

Tour included visits to: cafeteria,ICU,CCU,call rooms..

Questions asked: tell me bout urself, what are ur goals 10 yrs from now, what do u want to do after residency..

happy residents: yes / no / ? : VERY happy

research oriented: yes / no / ? they will help in research & provide a mentor for ur research but its not recquired..so its all up to u..

prematch offers? nope..n as far as i know, nobody else was offered one either..

visa sponsored? J1

City: BAltimore

What I liked the most: the faculty n residents seemed genuinely nice & concerned bout the welfare of the residents..

What I did not like: they were not very forthcoming on how they evaluate their residents & since i had heard that they recently fired one,i wanted some more info on that..

Rate experience (0-10): 9 (seiously its that good..if ur offered a prematch here take it for the love of god..)

Conclusion: i would love to go here..it was really dissapointing that i didnt get a pre-match offer here..i even mentioned it in the tahnk you note that i sent to the PD,but it was a friday n by the time i sent it,im sure he musta left..so im still hopin that he considers it on monday!!(keepin fingers crossed)

hey imad ! i think we crossed paths at JHU smiling face..

I was going to put in my experience at JHU but i guess imad has done it quite well already.

I think they hav a mandatory research requirement

  #22

we might have fido..i was the one who was persistently bringing up the topic of evaluations..

  #23

ok...i remember u smiling face...good luck!

Program Name: Union memorial Hospital

Date of Interview: November 8TH

Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: with friends

Level of "stress" (0-10): 2

How many interviewers: 3

How many applicants: 4 at a time but in 2 sessions (morning and afternoon)

Tour included visits to: floors ,ccu, icu ,call rooms ,library ,ED

Questions asked: PD talks about the program and asks if u have any qs. Other Faculty members asks about personolity, goals, future plans ,strenghts etc

happy residents: yes / no / ? : yes

research oriented: yes / no / ? no

prematch offers? yes

visa sponsored?

City: baltimore inner city

What I liked the most: friendly atmosphere

What I did not like: chance of getting into good fellowship is slim eventhough affliated to U of Maryland And Hopkins

Rate experience (0-10): 5

Conclusion:Over all program seemed ok. but if u r not planning to go for fellowship it is the best in terms of primary care. U can do elective rotations in U.Maryland and WHC ,DC or Hopkins and get very good reccos as all the faculty have some academic affliation to big universities.

Program Name:
HARBOR HOSPITAL

Date of Interview:
Nov 13th

Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc:
STAYED at Laurel MD with friend but the travel was really tough from there, i would suggest you rather not stay outside baltimore, anyway for somebody who had to the options for travel are :take MARC Penn line in morning to penn station from there take light rail to camden yards and on same ticket change light rail for cherry hills station and then take bus to infront of harbor hospital.

Level of "stress" (0-10):
1-2

How many interviewers:
2 interviewers (PD took interview of everybody, and Asst. PD started interview in morning but took interview of only 4 candidates and then left for clinics)

How many applicants:
13

Tour included visits to:
cafetteria for lunch (on 6$ guest meal ticket), floor, ICU, ER, Dr Lounge, Library

Questions asked:
why harbor, future plans, what you had been doing, questions about program, where else being interviewed and how many, fellowship plans, extra curricular activities and interests and hobbies, (these are my questions and may be different than others)

happy residents: yes / no / ? :
very happy residents

research oriented: yes / no / ?
No, though they have National Institue of Aging where active reserach is going on and they arrange electives for you in John Hopkins Bay area and Uni of Maryland.

prematch offers?
yes they do, and in rounds Cheif Resident advised us to ask about it openly if interested, on the least they wouldnt mind and will not affect your ranking,

visa sponsored?
J1/H1b

City:
Baltimore, area is all african-american area But very nice and clean (i took the bus remember) and decent people around, and yeah the residents dont live around but most in some apartment complex about 15 min from hospital.

What I liked the most:
friendliness of faculty, extra-curricular involvement, fellowship placement rate and places (including john hopkins, uni of maryland, mayo clinic and mass general boston)
What I did not like:

Rate experience (0-10):
7-8

Conclusion:
Good place to be unless you have a strong university program which has good enough fellowships of its own. city is old and full of places to visit and activities, easily reachable east coast states and suburbs are beautiful.
