I already made a post about this, but the post was so regretably long that i formatted this one. i do not know how to delete that posting, so i hope avatars do it for me Hi... <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> HOW DO YOU DO Questions? The way I have always done UW questions is, do a test on a particular organ or subject. Do a run through, take whatever my FA or goljan is missing, add it in. memorize and understand my notes, and do the test. normally score very bad, because certain things confuse me in the question stem, and I can easily bump my mark up a 10 % more, just because I might have clicked wrong, etc. I am just curious if it’s even just good enough if I just do the questions and get a feel for it, and expand my knowledge. Because as I get questions wrong, I see what the key is or the most imp concept and tricks, etcs. By reading the question and the explanation. Even for the questions that I am like “huh? “ I never saw that in my textbook, is it okay if I just understand that point specifically? Those of you who always say "oh my UW was 80%, or whatever before you wrote the exam" what do you mean by this? That you took say, anatomy test. Got a mark of 60... A few weeks later it went up, and by the time u took it for the last time for your review, u got it as an 80? Is that what is meant. Or—you took UW and your first time/last time this was your mark. Also the reason I am so worried is because, in the past, I have had a very good photographic memory for exams. I can recall almost word for word 50-60 questions easily. Because later when I come across it, I might just answer what I remember, not from what I actually know. because in my case, if I do that, the next time I write the UW portion I took a few weeks ago, I can guarantee a 90% because is ill remember the answer and question. Not necessarily I know the material, but I just remember what it looks like. I just want to know if what I do, re do a test a few times, and end up learning but also having a photographic memory is normal for all of you. Because then I am fine. Or do you never repeat a test again, and that is your final mark and avg. Because if that the case my final mark and avg if a low low 50. The way my current bout is, after the second time on a test I know I will get a 90 avg. I realize 99.9% the test will have diff questions, but I just want to know if what I am doing, or indirectly doing is sabotaging me, and not giving me a real idea of my preparation and knowledge. Someone please straighten me out. Especially those who have taken the test!!!!! I am very very worried, and need to know ASAP, my studying is halted.

seriously i find it upmost annoying when people will click on a forum , spend the time reading it but cant put a few lines together. for get giving me advice, can u just tell me, if you have a photographic memory, and if you will do the tests more then once, and your memory will aid in your mark

hi this is my problem too...and i asked it before from this people and many of them answered me that i do not have to worry about my score in UW .this is a learning tool ..but you know what,i think they are right but many of the people here that scored around 60-70% ,got 90+ in the exam ,and i think we can somehow imagine our score in the real exam from UW score, and that's make me worry...

hi shohreh- i totally agree. i want to know if those that said oh i got 80% on UW before taking step 1, did they do that same test previously? because i know that if htey did it before, ofcourse theyr mark should increase slightly atleast just because of recognition, and familiarity. i will get back to u if i find out

i think they did the same qs befor because it is very hard to get such a score in UW..i mean i hope my tought is right because if they did 80% infirst time i have to kill myself ,first time i score around 35-40% but you know something,i did the for example, biochemistry qs one month ago and finally without reading the explanations i scored around 60-70% but now when i came back to those qs again i didn't remember the material, all the qs are familiar but i forgot actually biochemistry, and now i am so scared i don't know about the other people...do yopu think it happens to others or it is just me?

hmm i think it is quite normal. i think your memory would go up a few notches if you did them on tutor mode like i suggested. because we can all take a test and take the result and walk away and it sorta will leak out of our brain lol. but if you sit there and qusetion why you got that wrong, you remember later. like some of the questoins i got wrong in my professor lecture classes , i will never forget because that embaressment of him telling me i was wrong-was mortifying. and i will life long remember htose answers. if you see what u got wrong, it will click in and later ur brain will pull out a red light and say "warning-do not answer this wrong again" thats true i dont think people could easily get so high on UW at first chance. i dont think UW is that hard its just that its tricky the way it is written. and some stuf i neever find in my books so they do put out new info. i think you have to build a photographic memory. the more you see something the better. go through a test on tutor mode. when u get a questoin wrong, you will get mad , confused, shocked. you will care enuf to read that explanation right then and there. and will remember it for future refernce. and od not fear, there are some subejcts no mater how often i do, they are new to me. i think its especially of the subjects we have always been unsure of, or worried of . goodluck

hi starbrite, i suggest you to practice qs always in a random test mode.it helps you know where you are weak exactly.and what u said is exactly correct.we always learn from our mistakes mostly. after doing the test review the questions even when you did correct.it helps u to learn the concept in much bigger and better way. the qs which you have done wrong read the explanation.THINK WHY YOU HAVE GOT IT WRONG?is it because u dont know the topic?or u know it but could nt answer because it is is tricky??or u are confused between any two choices? if u dont know the topic read the explanation and make yourself comfortable with it either way by just remembering it or by making a notes and revisng it now and then. dont think of scores at initial stages.no matter what u get just keep practising.at last stage u can surely get a 70+even touching 80s if you have utilised the q bank well. and DONT TRY TO LEARN THE QUESTIONS TRY TO LEARN THE CONCEPT.as golijan said they dont want to know what u know but how well u know??? good luck

Hello there, I hope this helps
njc... wrote:Hi praying4a99, thanks for dropping by. About using Qbanks (both Kaplan and UW, not only UW for me), solving the questions is not the key issue here. I would do them quickly, (most time could not care about the score), but spend the majority of time in reading all the explanations, making notes. From every Q, I learn a lot of stuff. Even the question itself will give me a lot of insights. I review at least two times, more possibly three times for the Qbank. Then at last, I would do the marked Qs one more time, randomized, timed mode to test whether I have really mastered most of the concepts (the first time, subjects-wise). I gather at that time, I could get at least over 90 for each block of questions. For step 1, I just used the Qbanks and FA, nothing else. But for step 2, I would add kaplan notes to my study formula. But I would only go through kaplan notes very quickly for two times, the most. Every one has different approach to get a 99. Make sure your route will help you master most of the important concepts of all the subjects, and build up your skills in thinking and solving problems in a quick and right way. Hope this will help you a little bit on your preparation. GL.
njc... wrote: one more thing to say. When reviewing the Qs and the explanations, I am thinking all the time, why I did that Q wrong, why I did that Q right; if the question stem changes a little bit, what will be the right answer; if the question asked something a little bit different, what will be the answer et al. When making the notes, sometime I put similar things together. For example, under what condition, you prefer cesarean section for a pregnant woman; I just list different situations which need c-section in one page. So it is easy to compare and memorize. If you don't feel this is a comfortable way to study, don't force yourself into it. Whatever works best for you, go with that. We want to study efficiently and effectively, with the specific way we enjoy. Best of luck. BTW she's a 99er. GL
