As suggested by jazmil, and drgeorgie
I will start a thread for Internal Medicine experiences. I hope moderators can open a new "sub forum" on match Internal Medicine forum. Where we can add our experiences about programs by state, to keep it somewhat organized.

Please add suggestions on the thread by jazmil here: http://www.prep4usmle.com/forum/thread/62687

This is for Connecticut Interview Experiences.

Program Name: Bridgeport Hospital /Yale University

Date of Interview: mid October

Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: drove.

Level of "stress" (0-10): 4

How many interviewers: 2

How many applicants: 9-10

Tour included visits to: ED, ICU, library, cafeteria, on-call rooms, lounge room.

Questions asked:, , what are your goals, tell me about yourself, why this program, tell about your country, strengths, etc. no medical questions, no case presentation.

happy residents: yes / no / ? : "yes", but not too much time to discuss with many residents.

research oriented: yes / no / ? yes, mostly clinical research opportunities, not official mentoring, but open opportunities to contact faculty.

prematch offers? yes

visa sponsored? H1

City: everybody complains about the city, but there are many places to live around bridgeport.

What I liked the most: good fellowship Placement, honesty of residents regarding the strengths and weaknesses of the program.

What I did not like: maybe the lounge room. on call rooms are decent and clean, though.

Rate experience (0-10): 8

Conclusion: Busy program, but not too much . Residents are in charge of approx 6-7 patients, cap 10 pts. Day starts +/- 6:45 and ends around 5pm. Diverse pathology, urban population. It is an old hospital under renovation. Residents seem strong, mostly US and non US-IMGs. The program director is very supportive and seems to help everybody to get fellowships. You can do some rotations at Yale-New Haven. No preliminary residents. 13-15 residents/year.

Program Name: Harbor, Baltimore

Date of Interview: october 2007

Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: drove there, stayed around airport(8 miles from hospital)

Level of "stress" (0-10): 3

How many interviewers: 2

How many applicants: 10-11(1 AMG, rest IMG)

Tour included visits to: morning report, directors round, library, ER, ICU, cafeteria..

Questions asked: year of graduation, medical school/region, interest(primary care vs research), if i had any qs..nothing challenging..seems to me it was an exercise to assess how long and lucidly i can SPEAKA ENGLISH.

happy residents: yes / no / ? : yes...if they were putting a happy face, they were extremely good at that

research oriented: yes / no / ? not much, helps in getting electives at hopkins...have an entire floor taken over by National Institute of Aging

prematch offers? Y

visa sponsored? H1

City: Baltimore

What I liked the most: academic atmosphere..they have the best ABIM passing rates in MD..

What I did not like: not much really to complain about..would consider this Program over many others..but they should allow more interactions with other residents...on my day they appeared to have vanished after morning report..but then they might have other stuff to take care of..like attending patients

Rate experience (0-10): 6.5

Conclusion: dont rush into prematch unless u objectively know that ur chances are slim elsewhere..

Program Name: Griffin Hospital

Date of Interview: Mid October

Where did u stay, nearest hotel, travel etc: From NY -> Metronorth -> Ansonia -> bus to derby(very lousy itinerary, so I would suggest drive if u can)

Level of "stress" (0-10): 4

How many interviewers: 2

How many applicants: 1

Tour included visits to: Morning meeting, cafeteria, classroom, ICU, call room...the hospital is small so u can probably walk around in 30 min

Questions asked: Tell me about urself, why u come to USA, why u know us, Why u think u r good at research, and what's ur life goal.

research oriented: yes / no / ?: yes, but they r very public health oriented, no bench stuff

prematch offers? yes for PGY2 and combined IM/PM position, but not for categorical

visa sponsored? visa policy is revising now, will announce later by email

City: Derby

What I liked the most: Very strong public health research. The hospital is a hotel(I actually doubt any 4 star hotel in US would be as good!), very beautiful, like a castle embedded in the forest. The colleagues and paramedicals get along well with each other. It's No.4 most desirable place to work in the US(No.1 in Health industry). And, Yale affiliated.

What I did not like: program too small, not strong in inpatient medicine. Too primary-care oriented. The patient population is not diverse. Traffic is not convenient. In a inner small county.

Rate experience (0-10): 8

Conclusion: I think it's a very good place if u wanna work in a hospital of hospitality and high living standard, but I m not sure the training is adequate enough to face future inpatient care. And u might have to handle everything on ur own when u r a junior resident(only 3 categorical residents constantly stay in hospital), less "logistics" is available. U have at least 3 months electives in Yale.(one month is mandatory for cath lab as they dont have cardiac lab). BTW, most residents end up in public health field or academic faculty. But once a while do people go to fellowship(very good ones, like Stanford, NIH, but no GI or Cardiac fellowship recently)

Excellent idea, prueba. We should make website like scutwork.com or something like that, but IMG oriented with reviews like these. grin

We should like, collect all these experiences after this Match season is over and compile them all in a website for IMG's applying for next Matches.

I agree with the scutwork idea.Any web designer geeks out there? Something like that really needs to be done to organize the IMG community and effort.

Yeah, this could be a project we can involve ourself into after this Match is over while we wait for the start of residency. grin Hope we do get into residency. Lets see how it goes. Prueba, if you are still interested after the Match is over, keep in touch with me. Maybe we can pull something up with the little I know about HTML and web design. sticking out tongue
