A newborn with cocaine s/s. mother used cocaine. Need to take newborn¡¯s urine to do toxicology test.
Next:
1.let mother sign consent
2.no need from mother for consent
3.others.

Take it -you must act in the best interest of the patient, especially if it is a life threatening case. Cocaine withdrawl in a newborn is rare, but can cause intraventricular or intracranial hemorrhage which can lead to brain necrosis!
I say take the urine and treat.
Any other opinions?

Let mother sign the consent, incase mother doesn't agree then take appropriate action

just a question. do you need to have a consent for a urine toxicology test? besides it's not the mother's urine. I say get the baby's urine and test it.
