They will ask you the purpose of visit and how long you intend to stay. Your answer will determine the duration of visa.

get the print out of the clander of this year's schedule that they have given in the NRMP that is stating what will happen on wich day and which is the match day. and take other communication with the programs and programlist and the e-mail that u have paid so much $ for the application it will definately help. I had to do that but at other port of entry. please dont ask which one

So if I say I want to stay for 1-2 weeks after my exam, that's just how much they will give me? I do not want to seem 'too eager' to stay in the US beyond my CS exam, but would like to stay for a month more so I could spend the holidays with my sister. Entering the US via San Francisco by the way.

Update, I was given 3 months by the officer at SFO. I am planning to ask for an extension so I can await the CS results and then take Step 3.

I entered JFK few weeks ago. I told the officer that I am here for USMLE and interviews (although I have already passed all steps). I said I want to saty till Feb. He said he can only give me max 3 months on visa for business, but since my area falls in grey area between pleasure and business, he can give me 6 months. So I got 6 months.

Congrats for the visa! I think you can tell the that you want to stay for about 4 months or till March-April for step 3. The officers at port are quite busy, so try not to go into too much detail, they just waana know how much duration they should stamp on your I-94.
