J1 Research and J1 clinical are different visas.....REMIND YOURSELF OF THAT. No hospital will sponsor your J1 Visa for research unless it is attached to a university (non-profit) which can call you for research and then offer you a J1...(research) which by the way CANNOT be converted to J1 Clinical which needs to be applied for separately.

So, you want to find a hospital sponsoring J1 research visa? The question is who suppose to pay for your living expense? the hospital? well, why they should pay you, if they can get somebody in the US to do the research as a volunteer? Your best option is apply for fullbright or other US institutions that have a scholarship program. And try your best to get it.

Change from J-1 research to J-1 clinical (ECFMG) visa is a very long process and takes atleast 6 months and usually 9-10 months. So if one is really interested in Residency, he/she should not choose J-1 research visa for entry.
