How does this work folks ? I have come up with 3 possibilities. Which is more accurate ?

1) Do all the applicants sit at a round table with the residents, and fire away with the questions ? And what if there are 10-12 applicants........dont you kinda get lost amongst the crowd ?

2)Or is it a casual get together where you talk, make jokes, and maybe get some questions answered in the fray of it all ?

3)Or is a one-on-one interview type, where residents interrogate you and really want to know what you are about ?

The reason I ask is because the entire process is kinda confusing. Everyone KNOWS what interviewing with the various directors is all about, and how to present yourself. We all KNOW what the hospital tour will be all about.

And I do know that having lunch with the residents is to kinda give you a feel of the program, and get insightful information about the hospital that might not be told by program directors.

But again, how does it work ? Will I bee "competing" with other applicants to get my voice heard, or am I overthinking this ?

Thanks for the responses.

Hi,

These are my experiences..

break fast usually Informal. In a cafeteria or in the room that you are first shown into for the IV. You can definitely talk(casual, anything) with other residents and PC. But most of the times other residents won't be there. They join you later.
The places where I have gone last year, lunch was also an informal affair. But this time the other residents and faculty may join you. And u might sit around a big table or it may be in a cafeteria. You can definitely ask your questions and get to know about the program during this time.

Dinner. You should dress nicely. I have seen only residents and no faculty for dinner. You can get in touch with them and you can show off your potential then.. That is also a very relaxed affair. I haven't seen any interrogation during that times.

Thanks for the info. guys. But still doesnt answer my question.

How is the dinner conducted ? Let me put it this way, and maybe someone can relate to me on this. When I went in to take the Step 2 CS, I believe I was the only IMG there that day. And there was nothing wrong in that; I was confident, even struck up a conversation with a student from Mississippi.

However, I noted that the demanor of the AMGs was a little different. Whereas IMGs (like us) are more humble and make it seem that we are grateful to the opportunity afforded to us to work here..........the AMGs act more as if it is their God given right, and some of them actually act as if they are doing the SYSTEM a service by working for it. And that came across to me while I sat that day in Atlanta, going through my CS. I was more ofcused on the exam; I knew what I had to do, and how to do it. And there were AMGs that had the mindset like mine. But a LOT of AMGs had this "why am I here attitude". They were quick to make dumb comments, trying to get a chuckle out of everyone else.

So thats why I ask about these resident dinners. I know what I have to do, and how to go about doing it. My concern is whether I have to create some space for myself, because other applicants will "take-over", or not give others a chance to speak. Or are the dinners small enough that everyone has a good time, enjoys the food, and gets to know the residents.

I am also supposed to have dinner a day b4 the interview.. I was wondering what it will be like. I can understand zrf80 what you mean as I also had my exam in atlata, but had mix of IMgs & Amgs. & agree most of them were so chilled abt the exam, whereas we IMgs were a bit anxious. but I guess they are more comfortable as they are in theri own healthcare system, but remember since teh program has called us for interview, they consider us competitive enough. so I guess we are supposed to be ourselfs & mingle & socialize with them & I guess its supposed to be informal affair

now that i think of it .. when i took my CS (Chicago) there were two groups that day during the breaks .. the IMG's sitting on one side and the AMG's on the other with no interaction between the two .. the vibes i got from the AMGs was that they saw the IMGs as intruding into their space .. i've gotten this feeling on other forums as well where most of the members are AMGs .. my concern is that when I go for dinner at a program that is predominant AMG, the candidates interviewing with me are more likely to be AMGs and I might end up being the only IMG there .. thats gonna be fun !
