Hi, everyone, I want to hear your advices.

I'm an IMG. My score: 87/90/PASS. No USCE, need visa. Graduated in 2005 with Master's degree in Medicine.

I applied for 126 programs on Sep 1st. Until now, I only got 2 invitations, 9 rejections, and 2 telephone screens without result.

I feel frustrated, and close to be desperate. It seems my chance to match this year is slim. I want to do something positive now, so, should I apply for more programs (isn't it too late?) or just keep waiting?

I appreciate any opinion shared here.

Thanks a lot!

Thanks, holydoc and prader-willi.

actually i do not like the idea of applying for more, either. choosing programs is a big headache! I'll try to be more patient, and hope for the best.

best wishes, everyone!!!

Why do you think your chances for next year would be any better?beside you have two interviews , donot worry ,you have good scores,126 programs are really big number for a good prediction (higher sample size=more power )you remember from statistics?
if you think you need to take a step apply to less competetive programs
good luck

Does calling up programmes help? or people u know in those programmes? or checking if they have help their interviews? I don't know what is the appropriate thing to do.

120 is a huge number. But U have great credentials. I am sure you will do better than u think u will. good luck.

Hey Dophin,
study for S3 is a good idea.......a lot of progs are asking for S3 now even without the need for H1b.............

Hey Medocuk, Dont call progs ...please........it just pisses them off..........I have posted many posts on the same see my post titled "Donts" http://www.prep4usmle.com/forum/thread/61603

hey drdophin i too have credentials similar to u and have only one 1 iv and 4 rejections.Just waiting for that magic day when i get 10 ivs on one day...world record. This is a testing time for so many of us.hope the ivs start flowing in the coming weeks or else it could be bad seen.

My few cents about calling the programs. It may be a little early to call the programs. But last year, as the end of year reached, we ended calling some programs and then! they pulled our files from the pile and reviewed it.

It is risky. Yes, you may piss-off some PDs, but in same cases, it may show your interested and follow up on the program.

Decide for your own, I suggest.

Totally agree.......But not right now

hi, gv5, I'm sure we will have more invitations, let's wait and see.

I received another email from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in Miami, Florida. I am accepted to participate their mini-residency program in Februray, 2008. I'll pay for $500 as the registration fee. I think it's a good oppotunity to obtain some US experience, although it's an observership, not externship. Did anyone ever joined this program? I would like to hear your opinion on it.

  #15

eturan, thanks for your advice! How about sending emails to the programs haven't given any response to my application (neither iv nor rejection)? Will it be better than calling them?

  #16

it is our right to call them , they are paid to answer . they can take their frustration out of their office , but not to you guys , here is ((The God Blessed United States of Amaerica)) , and we are all [one nation under God], believe on it , then you will see it is true
Cheers

What if someone calls them and ruins his/her only iv opportunity, then destroys his/her "American dream"?
Who's gonna compensate them then??? Me? You?
For a lot of friends here, it's live or die, so we should be very careful about calling.
I ve had enough number of iv(>20) to let me know that most of them don't like you call to schedule iv, not to mention calling for "iv possibility."

  #19

i think the biggest problem for less number of calls is that everyone applied to 100 and above programs .so every program is flooded.this was not the case in previous years.so with loads of applications the programs are also finding it difficult.

  #20

yes, most likely they are overwhelmed by the flooding of applications, and have no idea how to handle numerous incoming calls requiring verifying application status individully. Sending emails may be a good alternative, if we feel the need to make them hear our voice at this time. But being more patient and wait for a couple of weeks may be a better choice, if there's nothing new to update the application.

  #21

mph, it's amazing to have >20 iv! Congratulations!!!

I ve envisioned this would be a big problem that would decreases the iv call for some less competitive candidates, so I brought down my application from 100 to 60 places. But still, it doesnt seem to work well. Sorry about that to all.

  #23

Thank you all for sharing your experiences . and Good luck

About sending emails;

With the PDs/PCs as already busy as they are, not likely will your email inqueries about your application status be replied and they will most probably end up in trash box.

I guess there is no alternative, but to wait and pray.
