A PM I received from a forum friend which I think it's helpful if we can work out our opinions together for him/her, and this one looked like the one I posted before:

Dear mph, I would like to consult you. I have a similar question of yours. If both hospitals are alike in every aspect, you would recommend go which one?

50%IMG or 100%IMG?

Reason, please.

I Would say 50 % IMG, 50 % AMG.
The reason is to promote interaction between the AMG & IMG residents which would probably lead to very productive and interesting atmosphere, rather than 100 % IMG where all of them share more or less the same concepts

100% img is most probably a ghetto program so i think those with fellowship ambitions will have a hard time

there 100% IMG (categorical) programs with very strong preliminary residents (just AMGs) like St. luke's-roosevelt (very few AMGs categorical) and has a very strong fellowship placement... there are other programs like that with decent fellowship placements.
If the question is atmosphere? then just on the interview you'll probably see how residents interact, and you can also ask how the atmosphere is... MDs come from all over the world with diff. backgrounds...sounds interesting too.

what was your impression in your first IV mph?

My opinion is that both hospitals cannot be alike and get these numbers-
Or the point being- do more research- dig in and find out why the differences- This is the US and if no AMGs in the program I am pretty sure there is a reason for it- just like if the local guys in a city avoid certain places at night ,I wouldnt take my chances either
May be it sounds a bit like herd mentality but i think medical graduates are smarter than sheep and have very good reasons when they avoid programs
It still might be that the hospitals are great but theres other things in the picture- like Miradautas Vras pointed out- fellowship oppotunities, may be crime around the hospital- expensive to find housing- god knows what but try to look for the reason and if its something that doesnt apply to you then I guess its your call based on your preferences-

I would prefer the 50-50- it can be a bit like the story of the frog in the pond if you spend your residency with IMGs and have no contact with AMGs- it helps to broaden your views and find out more about the country- And I think thats how one forms a better viewpoint rather than just having stupid prejudices based on 1 or 2 people that you have met
All the more important if you plan to stay back in the US
Just look at it this way- why would i even bother coming to this forum and reading /posting opinions- i can also just stick to the 2 or so friends that I have from my med school from my city from my country, spend the rest of my life having only these opinions and prejudices about the rest and believe that the world is a small, evil place where evryone else is out to get you aprt from your friends-raised eyebrowraised eyebrow
The bottom line is that you might not like evry AMG you meet but did you even make the effort to get to know more than one ..the one you saw on TV sticking out tongue

It is a place where AMG occupies most positions while the best resident or the chief resident is almost always IMG. However, the international patients will par the American sufferers in amount, coming from all over the world. None the less, you can find out the best AMG dont like to come here. A lot of AMG are actually DO and from second to third-tier medical schools.

I was astonished by a proclaim made by a young interviewer, " We mostly take IMG from developed country as they more likely come here not for money. It's for better training. We pick you because out of all the few qualified IMG, you come from a developed country(WTF...discrimination...) and you want to go to a less-rewarding subspecialty. This corresponds well with our ideas."

Strange interviewer- even stranger opinion in a top notch place- doesnt bode well that even seems to be young and will probably stay on for years -disapproval
Maybe he wanted to actually make you feel good mph confused

May be you could have said "Its true I didnt come here for the money;I came here for the training But then I didnt except that you would choose candidates based on their nationality and per capita income rather than how good they actually are!"

Anyway dont let a few 'bad' apples cloud your opinions- Its always difficult deciding based on one day visit - enjoy the weekend

That's total BS!!! Obviously these people have not done a lot of traveling!!! So what? Just because you come from an "undeveloped" country that means you are poor and all you want to do in US is get rich? It is the most stupid thing I've ever heard!!! First of all I don't know about other countries but In Mexico to get through medical school you need to be at least medium class and to pay for the USCE and all the USMLE's PLUS the match you need to have a decent amount of money... but anyways they ought to know that coming from a third world country does not necesarily mean you are starving and coming from a first world country OBVIOUSLY does not mean you are swimming in wealth...this is such unfounded prejudice from someone that believes everything they heard.... typical people that think that in Mexico we are all indians sitting by the nopales, drinking tequila with a big hat and a donkey on the side, and same kind of image for other countries....ridiculous!!! disapproval

Don't get angry, GLO. Don't get mad with this as we are here to get training, to learn. I know it's hard. The earth is flat now, u never know what's gonna happen in a decade. Mexico may actually regain its glory in this century. Full of potential. I have ur stocks. nod

Are guys, best thing about bigots is just avoid them, because , at least IMO , they are always in minority. Here my roommate is an American old man and overall he is quite affable and good but there is this bigot undercurrent going on through lots of his comment[ He's from Alabama!dwink] and stuff. Now, he is a total loser , he is around 62 but still works small jobs, doesn't have a family or even friends , has a smoking problem and is in huge credit card debts.

Now he sometimes makes derogatory remarks about how my food stinks [ by the way I am Indian , and anyone who has ever been to an Indian restaurant might at least know that last thing good veg Indian food does is to stink] and how I eat it , and may be thats it because thats the way things are in India . Now he wraps this obviously bigot comment in some sort of lame joke format but I've been with him long enough to know what he means.

So what do I do? I just avoid him and if he tries to be too smart i just occasionally ask him How his kids and wife are doing! !

But he's an isolated example. On and average most of my American acquaintances are very amiable. They might be ignorant but not at all bigot.

Still this sort of mentality coming from an attending level doc is really surprising and es disturbing.
