Are azoles fungistatic or fungicidal? can somebody answer this, with a proper reference.

U can search the Pharma forum cos this discussion has taken place a couple of times if u dont get answered here.

it doesn't directly punch a hole in the membrane. It only inhibits the p450 mechanism involved in ergosterol synthesis. therefore --> fungistatic.

on the other hand amphotercin B, binds to ergosterol in the existing membrane and forms a pore "tear" in the membrane, allowing K+ to leak out and killing the organism. So it's fungicidal.

KLN clearly mentions it to be "fungicidal".
but i came across a question in UW, where it is mentioned to be "fungistatic".
So..........

hi,

its fungicidal....

it inhibits 14 demethylase....inhibiting....ergosterol synthesis...so....leading to a cascade of membrane abnormalities....so fungicidal.

kaplan is correct....

will come back and check...cos even i got this doubt just few days back...

Azoles also produce disulfuram like reaction -- amirite?
