Hi buddies,

Just wanna share the iv experience. I am interviewed today in a famous hospital in Minnesota for PGY2 position. The hospital is so so so big and grandiose, looking like 2 5-star hotels connecting by a well-designed bridge. There are 3 applicants including me. The other 2 r AMGs(one from UCLA, another from Columbia) wanting to transfer from preliminary to categorical.

We were taken to the cafeteria for breakfast and surprisingly, some wards hold morning meeting here, so we walked around and hear those great teachers and fellows talking. I even saw one nephrologist who was on the ABIM preparation course tape. At 8:30, we were introduced to the M&M conference of the General Ward. They invited a guy from Oxford to give lecture on BOOP. Quite educative as I had no experience with this illness before. The residents seem very happy learning there, keeping asking questions.

At 10:00, we started being interviewed continuously by 5 faculty until 12:00. Yes, 5! I think I did okay except with the first interviewer(he's a bit harsh too), when I was a bit nervous. They kept promoting their ideas by "patient-centered" and "no private patient in the hospital." I find almost every patient has 7 to 8 doctors of different specialty to take care of, so you get to learn a lot from other consultants. This hospital takes around 3-4 IMG out of 46 positions per year. Patient resource is from all over the world, so quite diverse. Research is mandatory otherwise graduation is not allowed. Very academic and idealistic place for maturation. But I doubt what we learn here can actually be applied to the real world.

At the end of iv, PD came and said that there are actually 3 positions for us 3, and we will let you know the result after faculty meeting. We would like to take all 3 of you, but if any of you are rejected by voting, we will rather let it unfilled. Very kind while confident PD! In the afternoon, we were taken to the ward to see a cardiologist teaching. Very knowledgeable and impressive. The whole day ended after the tour.

A world-renowned place, but already chilly now. Very beautiful and peacefully small town with a lot of IBM and this hospital's related workers and family residing. Not much extracurricular stuff. Not much data for me to track my research, so I probably will not take it even if I am in.

Congrats. Consider it well before you decide. Seems like a great opportunity but I guess you're on ground zero so you'll know if it fits your needs. All the best.

Thanx for the suggestion. It's not to say that I am very picky or arrogant. Actually there r reasons other than research which might bug me:
1. Unlike other AMGs, I ll finish residency with only 2 yrs training resume, which will not allow me to practice in states like Florida, Texas, California, and Hawaii. This would definitely force me to stay there for another year as a chief resident(that's what they told me).
2. Visa issues. Under current hospital policy, they ll not issue H1 for IMG, unless u already have one.

Am I too honest? grin

MPH congratulations, I hope the best for you. You make me proud. I would like to know more about your life besides your medical credentials. Could we know more about you?

Congratulations mph. I have a query regarding the residency breakfast/lunch. How exactly does this work ?

Do all the applicants sit down at the same table with the residents, and fire away (questions) ? Or is it a casual get together where everyone talks, jokes, maybe get some questions answered, etc. ? OR is it a one-on-one type interview with a resident ?

Cool mph- seems like you know what you want !!nod
There are only a lucky few who both know what they want and are in a position to get it.

Again, I wanna reiterate this: I am not better than u, all of u. It's just that I m luckier to get into a good school, do research, build strong ties, and according to that mean guy in Mayo, I come from a place that most Americans hold very positive impression toward.
