It is a lot of them. Zinc is a component in over 300 enzymes and proteins involved in cell division, nucleic acid metabolism, and protein synthesis. It is required in every step of the cell cycle and is essential for all reproduction. Zinc is part of the genetic make-up of every cell. It is required to maintain the molecular configuration of many enzymes, proteins, and certain DNA and RNA molecules. Zinc is a cofactor or metalloenzyme, activating and transporting enzymes, transcription factors, and hormones. It is a very powerful antioxidant, protecting cell membranes from oxidative damage, and is an important structural stabilizer of cell membranes as well. Maintaining zinc concentrations within cells is critical for their functional and structural integrity, helping to regulate homeostasis, mitosis, and apoptosis in response to toxins, various diseases, and cancer. Growth and development, reproductive function, immune integrity, tissue repair, acuity of the senses, regulation of appetite, and blood and brain homeostasis all depend on zinc molecules and reactions.
