How many of you think that by 2011, when we finish residency, that there will be a required 1 year fellowship for being a Hospitalist?

Maybe it's just a rumor, but there seems to be more talk about it lately.

Actually, Ive heard against it. The problem is that IF they tried to create a Hospitalist residency or Fellowship orgram, they'd need to get approvals, certifications, and set up a board that would be in charge of the entire process.

Too much money for programs to dish out for something that doesnt really need a "special" entity of its own.

I think it depends on the job market in 2011. If there are not to many hospitalist jobs available and plenty of residents wanting to become one, the hospitalist fellowship will be a reality and would be preferred by prospective employers. Approvals, certifications would not be a problem. As for now, there are too many jobs and too few prospective employees available and so nobody cares for fellowship.

One of my ex-residents is the Section head for Hospitalist medicine at a hospital. I just talked with him. A hospitalist fellowship has been talked about, but it's at least 10 years out. ACGME won't make a fellowship until there is a board certification available. That's about 6-7 years away for "specialization in hospital medicine" through the ABIM.

Chill - it's a three year residency for the next few years.

sweet, that's what i wanna hear. the laws of supply and demand alone would make me question the NEED for it right now anyway. you finish your 3 years of IM residency, you have to spend more time declining offers than looking for them.
