Dear BBB , Dr. C. Fischer, All, Any one ...... please my friend needs urgent reply as the IMG , old grad but not really old old .. .....re; the following programs ..... She does not have visa problem , USA residence , green card holder . Some USCE & will have more , no Msc or PhD or publication .

1. Q..., What are the Chances for her as IMG, not recent grad if apply for those combination programs as mentioned above ,any general idea ?

Should she apply them or no chance as IMG , old grad .. forget about her dream ? Please she need to know the answer very urgent , so she can go ahead & apply the programs or not .

Dear BBB ,

Thanks for prompt reply , sorry about the abit confuse Qs .. the Qs is not re chances , but more like your opinium .. your experinces, any one in IMG get those program in or they are like the Dermatology, surgery [ that have IMG in ] , radiology that almost non IMG in . Just she, my friend wants to know , clarity that worth to apply anxiously or not , though she might apply few of them , just should she apply alot, put the money in there alot or not .

Thank you BBB , hats off for quick reply , I do really like your signature re; chance & I read it not long ago that you had reply some one asking you re; purely the chance .. will get residency or not .

I am just trying to send the message, Qs, words here as my friend likes to know as the way she likes to know , ask .. re; how's the " chance " of her get into those combind program , but not really means the chance .. but means .." is that any IMG ever get into those combined program & how many , how often [ not means once in a life time only one IMG in or one every year ] ? "

Thank you BBB , wish can meet you one day in person to say thank you forr your help, replies, contributions in this forum & this thread too .

I will ask more Qs in next yr for myself re the match , or may be I will ask now re; combination program .. it's for my dream .. Int Med/Ped, Int Med/Psych , Int Med/Neuro .. is any IMG get into those program before ?? Like me as , IMG , old grad .. not as old , but grad long ago , need H1 , no USCE , but Canadian CE long yrs & still in part time now & will try to keep it till residency day .

Thank you BBB nod

Shwe , on behalf of friend [ she says thank you , but will like to know more re; her Qs , thank you ]

1. Q..., What are the Chances for her as IMG, not recent grad if apply for those combination programs as mentioned above ,any general idea ?

any experience on those fields?

2. Q... If as IMG ok to apply those program , how compititive are those .. like what is the cutting point those program are looking for .. in terms of score , yr of graduation, from where the med degree is , etc .

call / write programs and ask... not much experience here

3. Q... Is that good to apply for transitional , & preliminary yr or NOT .. ? ie for 1 yr only , in case catagories not match , so will get 1 yr big USCE , for next yr match , which will lead to better chance of get match in catagory program .

competitive:

transitional > preliminary IM > preliminary surgery > categorical IM

4. Q.. It is easier to reapply & get match in next yr match after not match this yr then with or without doing observer in that yr gap , than apply from transitional or preliminary 1 yr match this yr for next yr match

more difficult to get a preliminary year....so obs/externship will be very good if no match....nothing and gap...worst option.

5. Q... Call me , her nervous , re; Transitional , Preliminary .. what exactly the defination , Meaning of those & how , where , which specialities , programs eg. Universities, Communities, with or without affiliated with the universities .

transitionals : less positions...more competitive, "less work" than others...more rotation obgyn IM surgery, etc
prelimary IM: medicine plus 2-3 electives
preliminary surgery: surgery plus 2-3 electives

6. Q.. What are the level , duty, training, responsibilities in those transitional , preliminary ?

read each programs webpage....useful information

7. Q.. Is the salary, benefits, facilities, insurance coverage for health & your insurance for being working, has training in the health care field as MD in clinical ... are all same, similar like the regular catagorical residency posts ?

read each programs info and freida.

Hi,
the combined program of Internal medicine and emergency medicine is extremely competitive because there are only 111 spots in the whole country per year.

Transitional is variable . In many places it is a HIGHLY competitive program where you are competing with elite US grads going into ophtho and derm.
In other places, it is just a work-horse year.
Overall, preliminary medicine is hard because of what I just said about transitional. Prelliminary surgery is easy.
Nevertheless, if your credentials are good, apply to all.

Is it worth a few dollars extra in the application fee in ERAS to take a chance at your dream?
Apply, just don't expect much.

As for salary, health benefits vacation. These are very close for ALL programs and not very significant.
