quite interesting! Atleast someone cares about the bias. But I guess we cant complain much, we are entering a foriegn land which is giving us a lot of opportunities(if not all) so I appreciate that. Unlike UK, I guess that place is really biased. they still havnt overcome that they ruled us(i'm from india) at some point of time.confusedshaking headdisapproval

Anyways thanks for the post.

The bias against IMGs in US grauate education system is real and getting worse by the day. While the recent restrictions against IMGs in the UK may be upsetting I still think that UK is still a more accommodating place than US in terms of speciatly choices for IMGs. For example a few of my classmates are consultant plastic surgeons and dermatologists in the UK while such positions are near impossible here in the US for IMGs. What do we have now in the US? Most IMGs end up (often grudgingly) in mediocre FM, IM or Ped programs. Most come with dream of becoming CT surgeons, Radiologists, cardiologists, dermatologists, etc but end up in less desired programs. majority may never be invited for residency interview despite passing the requisite usmle exams. Some programs would rather shot down than train IMGs. In some subspecialties like radiology and dermatology the available programs and slots are artificially kept low.

There is a basic difference between the UK and US that need to be kept in mind: UK is small compared to US in terms of size and resources. UK medical graduates may face unemployment because there may not be enough job openings but the situation in the US is different. There are jobs available but not enough doctors to fill them and yet some programs would rather shot down than recruit IMGs. This is troubling given the unique history of US as an immigrant nation.

Not trying to take sides, but I personally feel that getting into residencies like these is pretty competitive for US grads themselves. With so few seats, it is unwise to classify it in the category of "bias". Anyone who is coming here from the UK knows exactly why!

i agree with img_2008, its not a bias, rather the competitiveness among US graduates alongside IMGs.

this is an article might be truth , might not, in fact might be biased . but please go to the world university rank link and compare your school with any us school, then judge for your self which school can give better performance in teaching medical students?
by the way I know many international graduate Dermatologists in chicago , just go to internet and search for them. and once again for example go to france and do your residency , search to see what is waiting for you after you finish.guys plaese be just and fair,

Well yeah. Also try going to Cts.net thats cardiothoracic surgeons' website. You'll find plenty of internationals. agreed they are of a previous generation of docs and that times are a bit more competitive now but I think in medicine it's a trend in everything and prospects might improve for us in future. Also one more thing to consider is that lots of us grads indeed have much more amount of research/other experience than us which is very important while we rely mostly on strong scores. Also lots of things regarding such experience and research are obtained through personal contacts and unfortunately , due to unavoidable factors, a major chunk of imgs don't have it. So , I think this factor will certainly affect initial aspect of training that's getting interviews for matching. Otherwise I think opportunities are there but price we have to pay for them is heftier than Americans and that is absolutely understandable IMO. There is a bit of a bias here and there , but thats inherent human xenophobia and it's going to be there. It'd be same if say for example India would be in America's place and non Indians were applying for residencies.
