Greetings! I am am currently in my 3rd yr (7th) semester of Medical school in India and some of us are in a slight dilema regarding kaplan. First of all the Examination System in Indian Med schools is very different wherein all the questions are based upon a comprehensive answer about a certain topic rather than analytical thought presented by MCQ's; as in they basically expect us to write essays and the main criteria for doing well in this system is having a very strong memory power and the ability to reproduce it. The good thing about this system is that it forces a student to be comprehensive while learning however, the drawback is that the student isn't used to the format implemented in US med schools that requires one to rapidly draw connections spanning two or three different subjects and diagnosing the case. However, this is, to a great extent, rectified in our final yr of med school where we study MEdicine, Pediatrics, Surgery, OBGYN etc. To fill this void three guys in our class just took kaplan and went about it the same way they would study for their class exams. Mind you they put in alot of work but ended up doing poorly. Then I began to get mixed opinions about kaplan from various sources which said that it is only a review course and that one needs to go through books like BRS Physio, Lippincott Pharm and Biochem, Goljan Path, High Yield Anatomy, etc ( All the good non-kaplan USMLE books) comprehensively and once one has thoroughly covered these books then he should undertake the kaplan course. I wanted thus, to know if it would be better for someone in my position to cover all the well known non-kaplan books for step1 completely first or to directly go on to kaplan. Thanks.

I would suggest you combine it, medicine is medicine, kaplan is tried and tested the books are a great guide, so use kaplan as the foundation and the others books to supplement. except for path goligan is king
