For an old IMG like me, I prefer watching DVDs and annotating lecture notes. Reading lecture notes alone seems not productive for me. The key is to get the concept down and lecture video seems serving better on that. The trade off is taking long time to get through these 170 hr lectures. My plan is going through all the DVDs, then read the annotated lecture notes. This should cover most concepts tested. Then, Goljan audio, FA and UW, NBME at the end for readiness.

Have anyone used the Kaplan Home Study plan? My plan is to use: Kaplan Home Study Plan + Goljan's + FA + UW Is this enough? Any suggestions will be very much appreciated. Thanks.
ShweHope99.9998 wrote: When saying kaplan books means, the 7 subjects kaplan lecture note print & bind original book with st 1 Q book, all 8 blue or white [ old one] you will get when attending kaplan course center [ will allow to watch all DVD that teach you all the subj in that 7 books ] or live prep [ real person teach you in class at the front of you , instead of you're watching them in DVD on TV screen teaching you ] or online web prep[ [only few hour of the DVD of center prep , with audio only or still DVD play like old time I am not sure on line ] . Kaplan books are so many, but when we are saying kaplan books without saying any specific , usually means that 7 + 1= 8 books , NOT the home study 4 ?? books . GL

BB ... do not use home one , so no advice , comment fr me. But most r using the 8 books as main plus Qs etc as others use commonly , also alot live frds too & scored as high as 95 . So I will use common books, Qs as all common ppl use generally , not just one or few use this & that away fr common ones then score 280 or 99 , I will not dare to risk that , it will works same for me. I will sticks with the commonly used books, Qs that give me secured , confident with kn all very well with ability to recall quick . What ever books u use u have to kn it well & if not read again or read more fr any till u kn it well . GL

im gonna tell u guys the facts.. a whole bunch of students from my med school already passed step 1 the lowest mark they got was 85%.. and they all used ONLY kaplan but they went to kaplan 3 month course.. some of them did the 7 week and got a 91%... Kaplan is more then enough IF SUPPLMENTED with the videos or live lectures.. but ALONE is not enough

bearbear: I used the Kaplan Home Study series (2005 edition) and took my Step 1 on 10/25/07. They were my main resource. I read them in detail from cover to cover twice, and as a result I felt very well prepared for the real test. They contained the answer to every question on my Step 1. Just to validate my claims, I scored 265/99. So if you go about studying from them in an organized and detailed way, I am sure you will crush Step 1.

Hi everyone... I'm new here and as a USMLE student too. 7 years after graduating I decided to take USMLE step1. At the moment I feel stressed so that is definitely not good time to buy books for USMLE... I bought Kaplan's DVD's for Home study and I have 2004 home study books (8 volumes) on my laptop. But I feel I might be missing something, so now I'm reading your posts and feel little bit confused. Help. please... 1. So, to make things easier, first I would like if somebody can explain me abreviations such as FA and UW... 2. And what does it mean Goljan? Is that - Goljan notes + audio (I already have that) or does it mean some other Goljan book? If yes, which one? 3. I just applied to ECFMG and I'm thinking to take June-July-August period... Does anoyone have experience with the study time (some of old IMG's) and if that time period of 8 months is enough (January - August)? Oh, BTW, I have 2 jobs and a family (big one)... ha! Thank you so much... Since this is my first post, I hope I can keep up with my ambitious goal to take this test... 'cause it's seems it will be veeery!!! hard road to go. Greetings to all of You.

FA = First Aid for USMLE step 1 http://www.amazon.com/First-USMLE-Step-2008-Usmle... UW = USMLE World ( Question Bank for USMLE Step 1) http://www.usmleworld.com/

Hi Lee, You mentioned that you bought Kaplan DVD's for studying. Can you kindly tell me where did you get these from? About the edition of your notes, you must check which edition is currently being used. In my view you should use the latest edition if possible as it might contain important recent advancements in medical sciences.

Docone, I bought it on ebay. About edition... I worry too. But I think I cant afford to buy new edition and I don't know anyone with 2007 edition to compare with. Is there anyone who knows about 2004-2007(8) differences at Kaplan? Is it really crucial for the exam? Or it's just matter of content order? Thanks.

Hi guys. I graduated at 2001 nad completed ENT residency in my home country. I have a problem about consantrating myself on long lectures. So i like questions with explanations. what do you suggest me about preparing for step 1 if i only do study Kaplan medessentials and first aid 2008 step1 and then solve thousands of questions with explanations(kaplan q book, kaplan vignettes, kaplan q bank, all pretests, board simulatory series)? Is it feasible? I decided to study with questions? That is why i think learning from questions is higher yielding than only looking over the subject. I realised that when i recalled nothing after completed kaplan anatomy lectures reading. I am waiting for your comments.

For questions: - USMLE World (online) -Kaplan Qbank (online) -Kaplan Q book (a printed book) For review books: First Aid for USMLE is more widely used than Kaplan Medessentianls. If you change your mind and start reading some books, start with Kaplan Lecture Notes. There is no one way to success, every one out there has his own opinion, what works for someone may not work for an other, So make the plan that suits you best. You can alway refer to the Exam Experiences page in this forum. You can find a bunch of advice and ideas there. I did not take the exam yet. I'm planning to in Sep. Good luck

Try BoardReviewer.com. It is a new qbank that some kids at my school are putting together and so far they have a couple hundred questions and explanations.

Most members over here use the Kaplan Lecture Notes + some of the lecture Videos.

It depends on where you are located. Over here, photocopies are sold at mediocre bookshops. You can buy them off the net. You can buy them from Kaplan centers. You can download them as PDF files. And the best is to inherit them from older friends!
