Hello friends,
I'd like to express my feelings to all IMGs from all over the world, specially from Arab countries...
I'm 2003 graduate from Egypt, I decided to take USMLE, and started to study 3 months ago, now I've finished 3 subjects (Physiology, Behavioral Science and Immunology), it seems to take much time with me, but with each subject (studied from Kaplan's) I read the whole book 2 times, watch lectures videos, reading FA and practice quiz from Qbook's blocks, all of that preparation is before turning to a new subject.
But all the time I hear very bad and negative comments, such as:
*USMLE is impossible now for Middle Eastern IMGs specially Arab countries like Egypt...Forget it my dear
*USMLE is very difficult, also you cannot take visa for travelling to take CS, many people is rejected everyday
disapproval
*They don't give H-1B one or extend it...you must have GC or citizenship
*Match is impossible for IMGs, specially older ones like me
*Competition is a killing marathon
*Costs are unbelievable...it's for rich men
*And finally most of my fellows consider going into Australian AMC, they say: it's easier, shorter, competition is not that intensive, you can immigrate into Australia even without AMC, you can go to Areas of Need to start your job...
But, personally I prefer USMLE as I heard that Australia is not the place for flourishing and improving your medical career, they treat IMGs inferiorly to natives in everything like paying, residencies, teaching...
I don't know where to go,
my energy is going down, although I loved USMLE preparation and I'm enjoying every moment reading reviews or answering quiz and feel it challenging and interesting experience, but my mind is exploding with negative ugly thoughts, confusion, and fear. I feel that I can't go on anymore. Hope is fading out. I feel warmth and intimacy here in the forum, so... Anyone had such negative thoughts before? Anyone can understand and feel me?
Can anyone help a poor IMG?
shaking head

Hi there! maybe because it is in the Journal section you did not get many responses...try posting it in the Support section.

I am not familiar with the visa stuff with respect to Egypt but my thoughts:

If you REALLY want to practice medicine in the US, GO FOR IT. Don't let the struggles deter you.

Obstacles WILL come. The road may not be easy. But do not focus on the obstacles, for you will never reach your goal.

The USMLE path is a marathon. So you GOT to keep striving, and pushing yourself...it is a matter of endurance.

And yes, we all get negative thoughts, its what you do with them that matters. Ignore them, try to be positive and move on.

So the decision is upto you. Good lucknod

*USMLE is impossible now for Middle Eastern IMGs specially Arab countries like Egypt...Forget it my dear

COMPLETELY WRONG, LOTS OF ARABIAN DOCTORS MATCHED

*USMLE is very difficult, also you cannot take visa for travelling to take CS, many people is rejected everyday disapproval

COMPLETELY WRONG

VISA FOR CS IS NOT HARD TO GET IF YOU PASS AT LEAST 1 STEP BEFORE TAKING CS

*They don't give H-1B one or extend it...you must have GC or citizenship

COMPLETELY WRONG

*Match is impossible for IMGs, specially older ones like me

COMPLETELY WRONG

*Competition is a killing marathon

YES

BUT THERE IS HOPE

*Costs are unbelievable...it's for rich men

MAYBE A PROBLEM

*And finally most of my fellows consider going into Australian AMC, they say:FUTURE it's easier, shorter, competition is not that intensive, you can immigrate into Australia even without AMC, you can go to Areas of Need to start your job...

AMC EXAMS ARE EASIER.

BUT FUTURE JOB IS NOT SECURED, AND EDUCATION IS NOT AS GOOD AS THAT OF THE US

But, personally I prefer USMLE as I heard that Australia is not the place for flourishing and improving your medical career, they treat IMGs inferiorly to natives in everything like paying, residencies, teaching...

YES, COMPLETELY RIGHT

I STAYED IN AUSTRALIA FOR 2 YEARS AND DECIDED TO LEAVE THERE. DISCRIMINATION IS STILL COMMON.

Hi, amazon.com is accepting First Aid 2008 preorder , but if not doing exm in 2008 st 1, do not buy yet , will ends up like me have 2007 FA book , but my exm will not be this yr yet.

Stop listen to others , that will delay u in study , exms too , also will put u down, loss hope.
ppl will do whatever to stop u some times , even we are in this side of world. So negative re to be MD in USA not possible as rumors , or others fail, not success does not means it will be you too .

Try ur best , expect the worst , wish for the best . If not happened , at least u have tried .

I'll take the exam in 2008 and FA 2008 is still not available in my country...
Thank you for your encouragement dear ShweHope99.9998, your words revive me again, but negative thinking is inevitable for me, although I'm trying hard to keep positive most of the time. US residency is my life's aim, I cannot quit the marathon easily, I'll try until the last breath nod

In that case better start early than late , since the later u start , the harder the exm & also the older u r in the residency point of view so u will have to do better score than ur young grad self .
I am grd long ago too , so by my new grd time , with alot of barrier beyound my control , so here I am try to get exm done found out the compitition is even not the same as 2 yr ago or 1 yr ago or even 8 to 9 mo ago with the exm difficulty & style changing .

Start ur prep asap then make ur dream comes through . Do ur best , if nothing happen, always something will be there , though may be not the best as u think . After all if ur USA dream not work out , which I believe it will if u want it badly , u can always practice some where else with ECFMG MD .
