I have applied to a categorical surgery position in a M. Program in New York.
Today I received an email invitation for Preliminary position in same program. I double checked ERAS to make sure that I have not checked the Preliminary position by accident, and it was not checked.
They have scheduled an interview for February 1st 2008!
My Question:
1- Should I call them and let then know that I have applied to Categorical only, and ask why they sent me interview to Prelim? Or just accept the interview and attend it.
2- Why Feb 1st? Isn't that too late?
3- If I accept the invitation and attend the interview, should I tell them that I need Categorical position during the interview.
4- Is there a chance they rank me for Categorical?

Thanks

honest advice: ask all these questions to them. Be clear to them, that You want to do categorical, And request them If they can schedule you earlier than february. Ask them If they can give an iv for categorical.

Don't worry about the date. What matters is how you perform during the interview. But if you can not attend that day, ask if they can schedule for another day.

Thanks silenced, M.D.
I don't mind attend that day, but my main concern is why Prelim? and should I ask them for a reason or should I request Categorical or not?

Just explain them that you applied for Categorical, but they sent you an invitation for Prelim. and ask them if there has been any confusion.

Maybe they want to offer just a preliminary position since categoricals are more competitive ? ...Since you are interested in a categorical position you could call the program coordinator and ask...
A good idea would be to call directly to thank them and accept the invitation and make sure it is for a preliminary position. Mention that you "also" applied for a categorical position.

Sometimes interviewers don't know if you applied for categorical or a preliminary position.... So make sure for what position they are considering you... extremely important for follow ups...

Anyhow congratulations, and good luck!

1. They offered Prelim. That's what you would be interviewing for.

2. Match lists go in on February 27. It's no later than some of my interviews will be.

3. If you go to the interview and tell them that you are only interested in Categorical, you might be wasting your time, money and their time.

4. Probably not. You knew from your email that they are interested in you for a prelim position.

Good luck

my take on this is for you to confirm that they are interviewing you for PRELIM and if you dont want prelim, dont go for the interview. that is what they want you for and they will not change their minds on that.

i respect BBB a lot but not all coordinators are not as diligent as you so there is a small possibility of a typo...raised eyebrow

Thank you all for your responses.
I called them and talked to PC. The email that I have received was from PD.
I told PC that I received an invitation for prelim position, but I have only applied to Categorical. When PC checked my application on his side, said 'Yes, there was mistake. You did not apply to prelim. I will let PD know and ask him to review your application again and see if we can offer you a Categorical position."
