FEVER as a post op complication

In OR, under anesthetics: malignant hyperthermia, of course!! Main cause: succinylcholine, halothane. Immediate Therapy: IV dantrolene, supportive measures 100% O2, correction of acidosis, cooling blankets, watch for myoblobinuria since may cause renal failure)

If fever a few minutes after invasive procedure, like catheterization: bacteremia.

Afterwards, mnemonics for sequency of probably causes of post op fever: (all "Ws")

1st day. "Wind": atelectasis, which might be followed by pneumonia on 3rd day if no treated.

3rd day. "Water": UTI.

5th day: "Walk" DVT

7th day: "Wound infection"

10th day: "Wonder where" -absecess(es) - and/or "Wonder why" (drugs).

It's like a sequence of events during a storm: first the wind, then the water (rain), then you walk to take cover, you can get hurt (wound), and finally you wonder where to go and why it all happened!!! LOL!!

Thanks Ivonne and njcjzy for your support!!!

I'm finally done with surgery!!... a little earlier than expected. Qbook: 76% and 74%.

I'm getting ready for the first round of Psychiatry/Epidemiology/Ethics. I should be done by November 25th. Let's see... After that, FA and then 2nd round reading (no videos needed) in Dec/Jan. However, as I have my CS test scheduled for Feb 1st -cannot change it, since my elegibility period ends a few days after that-, by Jan 10th I will have to start preparing for CS. In Feb I'll recatch CK with qbanks, hopefully taking the exam by late Feb or early March... All in all, I find CK prep very useful for CS and viceversa...

Nice schedule BW, specially because CS report takes 2 months, the only part that I didn't like was the waiting time ( 2 months) for CS and believe every single day I had a flashback of the mistakes I made during the exam. It is just not worth it to worry about it. I think that 20 days is enough for CS BTW where are you at...here in the states? All the best and keep it up!!!!

Thanks njcyzy, nany and Ivonne for your support! really appreciated and much needed!!smiling face

Finally, I'm done with psychiatry and ethics/epidemiology. It turned out to be faster and easier than what I had planned. It was all in all very similar to step 1 contents, which I happened to study a few months ago. Qbook tests: #1= 82%, #2= 86%. I found these quesionnaires too easy, though. I read somewhere on this forum that this qbook is worthless. Nevertheless, I found it useful as a revision tool. Besides, there's always some new explanation and unexpected relations described between topics in there. I found, thus, the qbook useful.

Nov 27th: beginning second round reading. Starting with KN notes, this time w/out videos, since I wrote down notes from video lectures on KN books. I, thus, expect this second round to be faster than first one. To begin with: IM, gastroenterology... ready, set, go!!cool
