1. How old are AMGs in general when they start residency? I will be 31 when I start residency, is that a disadvantage when I apply for univ. programs? Will I be considered as old by my fellow residents?

2. In Sweden we have to do a 21 month internship after med school before starting residency. When I start residency it will be three years since I graduated, will that be a disadvantage?
(I can, of course, skip that internship, but then I will not be able to practise medicine in Sweden).

Residency programs prefer fresh graduates, but most of them have a 5 years after graduation tolerance.

Dr. Sweden,

most AMG graduate at the age of 26-27 but there are many, many who are older (did not start med school right after college). Don't worry about your age, you should be fine.

3 years post graduation is great since most programs have a cut-off of 5 years and the good thing about it is that you'll have clinical experience.

Good luck!

I'll be 1 month short of 40 by the time July 1 rolls around! Age discrimination is unlawful in the US. Your credentials will speak for themselves.

Although they can NOT discriminate you because of your age, they DO have a line saying GRADUATION YEARS.

yeah, years since graduation is more important than your chronological age but honestly speaking, if your chronological age is 'a bit' (like mine ... turned 40 in august) even though they wont say anything about your age but you bet, they will put it into consideration. sorry honey but that is how the cookie crumbles. ( you are likely to be as old if not older than your attending, and senior residents. they may feel intimidated about it.) bbb may be able to shed more light into this.
