Hi all, Right now I am reading NRMP application user guide, and I am confused by something they mentions there.May I list my questions here: Types of Positions Offered through the NRMP Residency Match: 1: Categorical positions (C) are in programs that expect applicants who enter in their first post-graduate year to continue until they have completed all training required for specialty certification, provided their performance is satisfactory. Primary categorical programs in medicine and pediatrics are designated by (M) my questions: 1) is categorical position designed for people who wanna compete for fellowship after 1 year of training? 2) what is primary categorical programs in medicine ? 2: preliminary position(P) provide one or two years of prerequisite training for entry into an advanced position in specialty programs that require one or more years of braod clinical training. Internal medicne, surgery, and transitional programs commonly offer preliminary position. my questions: what kind of intenal medicine needs preliminary position??? I only know preliminary position for radiology. ok, my another question is : if i do 1 year preliminary position in internal medicine and find out i dont like internal medicine, can i apply radiology( forget about how hard it is , i just assume) in second year? do i ask too much?? I will take a break for asking questions then

I know once you are into the system, it is easier to get what you want. So you might have a better chance in radiology but I don't know how much better your chance is. As for the other questions. I hope some one who knows answers your Q. I'd like to know as well. Thanks.

the internal med preliminary position is only for 1 year - so if you decide to continue in internal med you will have apply to a second year position... if you wanted radiology then you would just apply to radio then... I don't think you are qualified for a fellowship after one year of training... in a categorical position you are bound to complete the full residency unless someone kicks you out of the program!!! hope i answered at least some of your questions...

thanks medocuk and CocaCola. I would like to ask: 1:if you apply for categorical, does that mean you would like to compete for fellowship in the future? 2: if you have finished 3 years categorical training but you dont get into the fellowship training, where can you go, what kinds of doctors will you be?

You will be aan internist... you can go into private practice, become a hospitalist, large clinic, etc... you don't have to subspecialize to work in internal med... a categorical position means you will finish your specialty training and at the end of training you are eligible to apply to subspecialization (fellowship)
