a 34 yr delivered her first baby 5 wks ago, calls ur office and tells u dat she is feeling vry overwhelmed and anxious.she feels she cant do anything rite and feels sad throughout the day.she tells u dat she finds herself crying all the time and is unable to sleep at nite. wat is the most likely diagnosis?

A. postpartum depresion

B. maternity blues

C. pstpartum psychosis

D. bipolar disease

E. postpartum blues

also wat treatment do u recommend?

A. time n reassuarance coz it is self limiting

B. referral to psychaitry for counselling and antidepressant therapy

C. adm to psy ward n therapy wit halodol

D. a sleep aid

E. electroconvulsive therapy

looks like post partum depression .... more than month after delivery .... lack of sleep , tearful , feels sad thru out day ....



treatment willl b rfer to psy for counselling and anti depressant ....

Patient has post partum depression, usually over the 1st 3 mths post delivery,symtons like major depression,interfers with ability to care for baby will benefit from anti- depressants.

Post partum blues: symptoms peak by d 4th to 5th day postpartum n last several days,doesn't interfer with mom's ability to care for baby

Tx support n reassurance

Post partum psychosis: Usually has hx of bipolar dxor,dramatic onset as early as 48 to 72 hrs after delivery ,resemles rapidly evolving manic or mixed episode,Tx with mood stabilizers
