Hi there,

can anyone give me some advice? i am offered an h1b research position...i know research is going to help me with resume, but will this h1 visa at nonprofit university research help me with the visa issues of residency? or it doesnt have any effect.

i am already doing a volunteer research job, i have to decide whether to use my years of h1 visa or not....i will apply next year, so i will be using almost 1.5 years of h1 before 2009 residency start or if luck denies, more than that...

can nayone share the experience?

Thanks..

No, a H1b visa for research is a different visa than an H1b clinical.

hey bbb , thanks for reply, so r u saying that clinical h1 and research h1 is not just the " change of employer" but they r different category?! so can u tell me if i take up the h1 research visa, would that be an obstacle for taking clinical h1b later? how does this thing work?

i would appriciate some reply from persons who has done this before or know someone who has done this kind of research and then taken residency.

thanks..do reply guys..

hey there,

sorry for late follow up, i was a little busy with a project. I found this position on website. I emailed the prof, interviewed with him and got a volunteer position. worked hard, impressed him and in 2 months, he offered me an h1 visa job position.

now can anyone tell me whats the difference between h1 research and h1 clinical and if i take this job, will it be helpful in taking residency or will it be an obstacle? how does the transfer thing work for that? I have to reply him in this two days, so please guys, explain me in detail and help me make a decision.

Please be quick...thanks

if residency is important for you, then go on and take this H1-b research visa, and you can always apply for a residency on J1 or have yuor H1b converted from research to clinical, as for the time period i really don't know how much will be deducted and on what status, however if yuo file for green card, and be able to secure that in time or have its status pending thenits a different story.
check out all the stuffs on dhs website
i am in a similar postion as u are, i will be doing a research work on a voluteer basis at jhu, and looking for h1 as they get the funding and i be able to impress them...and this will be my strategy.
sorry for not being able to help you much but search out for this dhs.org
regarding j1-research, if you change your status to j1-clinical, your total time period remains for seven years and does not get renewed upon changing of the status, not sure whether the same applies for h1
good luck

hi..thanks dor the reply ssrpk. i appriciate it.

yes i have decided to take the h1 research visa and u have boosted and given me confidence with my decision. i dont know what did u mean by " funded when u joined" , perhaps i dont understand these things. but i know that its a non profit organization and it had some grants for this research and recently my professor has managed to get some good grants for the new projects for which we all at lab r eexcited. so lets see what happenes.

as far as greencard is concerned, i am not sure if i will be able to secure that, but i am leaving some decisions to God and my destiny for now. lets see whats there for me in future.
