syringomeyelia-- loss of pain & temprature with.without motor involvement.

anterior spinal artery infarct- same????

can anybody tell me some differentiating scnerio of both.

these two conditions are completely different

in case of Syringomyelia we have spinal cord cavitation, which would get involved crossed part of spinothalamic pathway (pain and temperature; Pt would have symmetric loss of it @ the level of lesion) and may or may not involve motor fibers, which may give motor disturbance as well.

when we have anterior artery occlusion we have damage in ALL pathways (sensory and motor on both sides) EXCEPT posterior columns; Pt with this lesion will definitely have motor weakness in lower extremity (more common) or upper and lower extremities, also spinothalamic pathway gets involved as well, but not only @ the level of lesion, but below lesion also.

because posterior columns are spared in both cases there will be no tactille sensaton loss (or proprioseption and pressure).
