Is it possible to start preliminary year in J1 and next year apply for categorical on H1B?

i think once u r given j1 visa it is always j1

Nope - can't convert a J visa to an H visa ___________________ bbb - trying to combine common sense and humour into realistic answers, but not going to guess on anyone's chances of getting into a position....
