hi, I am an IMG of India.I have completed my MBBS(Under graduation) on 2005.I am planning for USMLE.But it will be impossible for me to complete step-3 on 2008. That means I can not apply for H1B VISA for residency on 2009, but I can apply for J1.Now what will be better for me.Will it be better to go for 2010 match for H1B VISA or should go for J1 VISA for 2009 match?

if u get a j1 visa u will hv to means hv to return to india come wat may ,after u finish ur residency. so i guess unless u dnt want dat to happen u shud prefer a h1. so dat means u plan for 2010 match.

if u want to give j1 a chance, u can give ur steps 1 n 2 n apply for the 2009 match.

anyway i think u shud start giving ur xams if u think u r prepared.

Thanx titly for ur advice...but my concern is that if I go for 2010 match then my duration of passing undergraduation(i.e.MBBS) will be of 5 yrs and if I go for 2009 match then it'll be of 4 yrs...I wanna know does it carry a negative mark of losing an extra yr, even getting of H1B? disapproval

well dat depends frm place to place. hv hrd of ppl getting adm who hv hd more than 5 yrs since their graduation.

if u r planning to go for the 2009 match thn u will hv to forget the h1 visa coz u just cant get it if u dnt pass step 3. in 2010 u hv chances of getting a h1. plus u also increase ur chances of getting inteviews . dnt worry u will get residency.

even if u start wid step 1 right now...wld u be unable to write step 3 by dec 2008? if u can..I think u still can get h1b....criteria for each programvaries regd till what date they want the h1 caniddate to finish step 3...but having researched many programs this year...I didnt come across any program which says pass ur step 3 when u apply for h1....the ealrliest date for passing step 3 for h1 that i came across was december. and i am telling u the earliest. if u can clear ur step 3 by december 2008..u are in good position to get h1.

if u take j1...u have 2 options..either u go back to ur hoemcountry..or if u wanna stay in US..u take a wiaver job in underserved area/ VA hospital for 3 years. So its not like u HAVE to return to India..but plz understand that waiver jobs are limited and hence if u are unable to get a waiver job, then you have to return to ur homecountry.

oh...IMP thing...the h1 criteria i mentioned (till december thingie)...that is for IM programs....for other programs u might have to research for urself.

wish u the best

Thanx...but misty, to clear H1B within Dec-'08 means I have to pass all other steps within August last('08) as last date of application for step-3 is within september 1st week, according to this year criteria...All I mean that I have to pass step1 & 2 within 11 months preparation(including US travel schedule)... Anyway thanx for valuable advice to both of u.... nod

stick to h1bvisa and dont worry about years of graduation.... many programs dont mind old graduates but if u go to j1 u will be thrown back to ur country unless u get a waiver job

no dude..u can apply after sept too...just dat u will have to use application material for 2009 and not 2008 if u apply after 1 sept.

  #10

the deadline u are mentioning is when ur SLOT ends in dec then u have to apply before sept first...if u slot extends in jan 2009 u have to use 2009 application material...hope dat makes sense to u....

go thru info for step 1 2 ck applic..u will understand what i am saying
