Dear bbb this is the first time I bother you with a question (I know you dont think people here are annoying or anything otherwise you wouldnt be here), I want to know from your perspective or your program's perspective how important are foreign med school grades in the applicants' selection criteria? I know this depends on each program, but perhaps you might tell me what is the general consensus between programs.. I was at the bottom half of my school (I had a very busy social and work life to keep up with) and I feel I am not going to get much ivs because of this (btw board scores are not an issue)... Thank you..

There was a link provided by this forum (or maybe studentdoctor.net) that cited that most programs put grades at the top of their list........some moreso than board socrs. However, considering the variation that exists when it comes to foreign medical education, the only consensus that can "equally" judge each candidate is your boards score. Now, I dont think thats necessarily fair, cause I know people that have rocked the USMLEs, but couldnt tell you the difference between your left and right lungs. And Ive met doctors that may be "lost" when it comes to opaper exams, but are epxerts when it comes to clinical judgement. I would have to say that a lot of programs (in terms of IMGs) looks more towards your USMLEs and experiences, and grades are secondary. Whereas for AMGs your grades might serve a little more importance. Anyone else got an opinion on this ?

Well said zrf80. I totally agree with you. Besides, everyone thinks they went to the best school in their country, usmle scores are the only way to place everyone on the same playing field.

I dont think your medical school scores will make a difference with a usmle score of 99 Donot worry ,you will get interviews at good places,I guess you have to be patient ,which I think is difficult for all of us . good Luck for the match

"I know people that have rocked the USMLEs, but couldnt tell you the difference between your left and right lungs" I dont believe this. If the USMLE tests thousands of topics across multiple subject areas, amongst which Thoracic Anatomy is one, and if u do good in such a test, how can u not know the difference between right and left lung. If you dont know that first step in anemia management is a peripheral smear, how good can u be clinically? I've seen people answering that INH therapy causes B12 deficiency.

well ginko you got a point there, but what I think zrf80 was trying to say is the there is no clear correlation between usmle scores and how good a person is going to be in a clinical setting.. He was playing a satire of the truth, it was not supposed to be interpreted literally..

Thank you.. No, with a new puppy, I didn't get on line over the weekend.....your transcripts aren't going to be a big deal, as long as classes are passed the first time. It's really hard to read the transcripts from many schools overseas.......
