if program is sponsoring both j-1 and h-1 visas, then which visa do they want to sponsor more happily?

I've got an email from one program, which sponsors both H-1 and J-1 and they are asking which visa am I looking for? Please help me answering them, I know for H-1 I do have to take step 3 whcih I'm already planning to take in December/Jan, so please tell me if they would be more happy if I say J-1 or H-1?

Thanks!

You can alwyas say that you are considering both... as you are planning step 3 anyways..

state your preference ffor the visa but you can aslo say that if you like the program in the interview, you may consider opting for the visa they offer... usually big places offer j1. Be diplomatic... if you are not desperate for H1, J1 is not a bad choice.

Thanks Moozy,

Actually I am O.K. with J-1 visa, but the thing is that one of my friends told me that if the program is sponsoring both, they don't want to miss you after doing residency and they want you to practice medicine in USA, as they know that they are short of physicians in USA. And if you'll go for J-1, they might get an impression that you don't want to stay in USA and they wont offer you an interview.

My intention is just getting & doing residency at this point, and am equally happy if I'll have to come back to my home country after the end of residency as I can practice medicine even here.

As others, I'm new to this visa issues, so I wanted to get an opinion, as I'm only getting rejections so far and this is the first little hope that I may get an interview.......

as moozy said answer diplomatically to keep ur option broad.

hi.

i gathered the impression that progs are not too happy to sponsor h1, coz that's a route to migration, and they do not want imgs to use residency as a gc ticket. i assumed this is why most progs only sposor j1, in fact a large number only accept ecfmg-sponsored j1s.

sorry, cs_usmle_can, not trying to confuse you further, just clarifying for us all.
