Chiqui, I read your post. Under the circumstances, somebody could have been miserable but you write "I have never been happier in whole life" I'm so proud of you. Best of luck.

  #52

Dinie: thanks for your kind words. It feels good to have people appreciate how much I do every day. But really, if I were miserable, it would mean that I don't see how blessed I really am. I have a wonderful family, I am healthy and my kids are healthy, I love my husband, I have everything material that I need, I passed my USMLE's . . .God has been very generous and merciful with me, and very forgiving of my many mistakes. A little hard work is the least I can do.

wow! this is an awesome post! i am also mom of a 4 year old trying to get through my exams. i have not applied yet but i plan to work on my application this weekend. i have one exam left which is step 2 CK... i'll be taking it on oct 22. it has been tough trying to juggle everything... husband, daughter, reviewing for the exam, taking care of the house... it totally drains the energy out of you! but i am glad to know that i'm not the only one out there! and we are all an inspiration to each other!

  #59

doc_mishel: Good luck! Its a lot of work. Let the house suffer for a few weeks and do the best you can. You can do it.

I have a funny story. As I have mentioned, I am still in med school, completing my internship. I was a little stressed out the other night, because I am going to have to make a few trips to US for interviews, which means I have to figure out what to do with the kids AND i have to miss school, and if I miss a certain number of days, they can fail me. So I'm all pissed off when I go to bed and my little girl, who turns 3 on Monday, says to me "Are you sad?". I say "No, I'm a little worried because I have a problem". She says, with the sweetest voice and a smile like an angel: "You can tell me your problem. Explain it to me."

Small world - turn out I know who Allymd is!

Hey ladies. I thought I'd take a few minutes to vent here. I'm furious with my university, as they are making it hard to complete the LORs (which FINALLY I got yesterday) and MSPE (which I still don't have). In the meantime, finals are coming up, kids have the flu, I have torticolis (are you surprised!) and I have $200 to my name until I get paid again on the 15th. On the positive side, I got another interview today, which makes 4! I don't know how I'm going to fly to US for those interviews, how I'm going to miss school and not get into trouble, how I'm going to take the kids or whether I should leave them . . .I don't know anything anymore, but I'm still thrilled to get the interviews!

On an unrelated matter - Did any of you ever wake up one day and realize that your kids no longer sleep in their crib at all, but always with you? If so, what did you do about it? You are all from different countries - I know Americans frown on sleeping with your kids. Is this socially acceptable where you are from?

Thanks for your reply and your concern, I am a canadian immigrant trying to get a residency close by canadian border (Detroit) comute every day from canada border to closeby USA Hospital, here (canada) rigtht after having baby, can go for one year maternity leave, if person is permenant employee, planing to get a baby because we realy love to have one, but still I am getting scared to be pregnant bcz of hormonal changes, which causes so many things (throughing out, dizziness etc) Therefore I like someone to assure me 100% by law that I can go for maternity leave for one year in the middle of residency
Or give me an option how to rejoin the same residency program if am not able to continue it because of pregnancy and has to quit without lossing any time or how long maximum i can go for maternity leave.

  #65

I know nothing about maternity leave in USA, but let me tell you: during my first pregnancy, I worked normal hours, including weekly 12 h night shift, untill 2 weeks before my baby was born. Just want to tell you not to be pessimist, pregnancy is not a disease, most of them go really, really well.smiling face

1 year is a lot longer than whats given in the US...
you will get maternity leave, usually its about 6 weeks... freida has the length of leave offered by the various programs...
of course if you have some medical issues the PD will accomodate you for an extended leave... however if your reason for leave is you want to stay home with your child or be off during your pregnancy because you aren't feeling well, then i doubt any residency program would allow it... legally you can be fired if you don't return to work within the allotted time...

I have to agree with Arlete... pregnancy isn't a disease and no PD is going to treat it as such... they will expect you to fulfill you committment to the program...
raised eyebrow
i don't mean to sound like a pessimist... just trying to honest!

I agree, you just have to try and be positive and pray for a nice pregnancy.Cos sometimes, a bit of the difficulties in pregnancy can have a pschologic aspect, and if u are already so scared u will have a difficult pregnancy, chances are you will.
Just pray for the best.Alot of women work while they are pregnant. I am sure people around u would cut you some slack every now and then.
wishin u all the best

You can't get one year of maternity guaranteed. Usually you work until you go into labor and then you get 6 weeks off with pay. You can take a little longer if you take your vacation time. You can also usually take a few months off without pay. But probably not a full year. If you get sick DURING the pregnancy, you may qualify for sick leave, but you will be praying that DOESN'T happen. Regular pregnancy malaise will not generally result in your missing that much work. Obviously, you will fall behind in your residency if you take more than a few weeks off. You will also probably piss people off if you get pregnant as soon as the residency starts, but legally they aren't really allowed to do anything about it. If you want them to cooperate with you and look the other way when you need them to, you might be better served by starting the residency, establishing a good reputation as a strong worker, making some friends, and THEN getting pregnant. There is never really a good time to have a baby, but second year may be somewhat better than first year.

Being pregnant has been one of my favorite times in life. I felt tired and nauseous the first three months, and then fine the rest of the pregnancy. Unfortunately I had come complications and had to complete both pregnancies on bedrest, so pray for a healthy and uneventful pregnany.

  #72

Allice, sweetie, I don't know how much this will affect you interviews. I'm real sorry you failed, though. The best you can do at this point is just to register again ASAP, sit in front of the computer until you get a date, and keep trying. Good luck.

Hi all,

Never thought that I would be joining this mom's group. But now that I am 7 weeks into my pregnancy, I think I can join you all as a mom-to-be.

I have a few doubts. I have an interview on Feb 2008 at a program of my highest choice. I would be 5 and 1/2 months by that time, how much would my tummy show up? And also I have heard that PD usually do not prefer pregnant females, is that true? I am trying to find a date in Nov/Dec but all the dates have been given out. I feel happy for the baby and also sad that I may not be chosen at my choicest program because of my pregnancy.

  #75

There isn't much you can do. Don't bring up the baby - they probably won't bring it up either because they aren't supposed to take that into consideration. You can all just pretend its not there. But have faith that God will resolve everything in a way that is good, even though it may not go with the plan you have set out for yourself initially. Congratulations on your pregnancy. Don't let job worries get in the way of enjoying this special time. Everything will fall into place if you have a little faith.
