Hi,
I graduated in 2001, did internship for one year in my home country and was working till 2005. I met my husband in 2004, and got my visa and came to the US in 2005. I have 4 months observership. And I have a 3 MONTHS OLD BABY GIRL. So you can imagine what I might be going through. Though I was 7 months pregnant when I gave my step 2 I somehow managed to score 90, I have also passed CS. But I have no excuse for scoring 79 in step 1. Anyways now I am applying for IM, FP and pediatrics programms. I also have 3 good US lor`s. My main conscern is leaving my daughter when I travel for interviews ( that is hopefull thinking as I have no interviews yet ) But I am hoping I will get something. So guys goodluck to everyone and lets hope for the best.

di:

Some programs do consider step 2 more important than step1 score (which makes a lot of sense to me). Good luck, keep us posted!

Hi Arlete,
Thanks for the encouragement. Every story in this post is motivating. A good thing is after reading all these posts you do not feel alone anymore. Goodluck to you!

Hi,
I too am in the same situation.
My credentials are
Step 1-97
step 2ck- 99
step 2 cs- passed
step 3- 80 ( all in 1st attempt).
Graduated in 2001 sept. Staying in US since Aug 2002 and have a 3yr old. Has been a full time stay at home mom.
No USCE at all. No research or nothing like that.. Applied last year. But applied late, needed visa got only 6Ivs and attended only 4. Didn’t match..
Applying again in IM, Ped, OB_GYN. No improvement in credentials other than having an EAD. Has been trying to get USCE. But so far not successful.
Got 4Ivs until now 3in Ped and 1 in IM.. Hope that this year my luck will be better.

Atticus i have a question for you.
Last year during your interviews did anyone raised the question why you stayed home for such a long time and did not do anything? If Yes then how did u explain your clinical gap? were they satisfied with your answer?
Thank you.

To those concerned about travelling for IVs - I totally understand. I had not left my daughter alone overnight EVER - not even when my second child was born (the night of my son's C-section I slept with one baby tucked under each arm!). For the CS I had to travel to NJ for a review course, during which I stayed at my mom's house and she helped take care of the kids. But then I had to travel to Atlanta to take the exam - the kids stayed with my mom. It was tough, especially since I am still breastfeeding! Part of me liked having a bed all to myself for a night, though. Anyway, I hated leaving them, but there was not much of a choice. My family sees this as a team effort, and my mom and sister both took time off to help with the kids for a week. I have no real advice, only empathy to offer. Don't be afraid to ask for help. It takes a village.

Hi step 2 ck,

Sorry for the delay in response. actually they did ask me questions like that. during my 1st IV, when asked I replied that I didn't do any thing( big blunder)!!!.. And the program director asked me what do u mean you didn't do any thing, you were raising a child.. So i think people do understand, but they expect us to have some USCE which unfortunately I don't have. Most of the other applicants who interviewed with me were either fresh graduates or with big credentials or UK experience. May be I was more laid back and didn't seem aggressive. I don't know. but i guess something definitely wrong.. so hope to correct the mistakes.. and good luck to all of you..

Hello Ladies,

I am di's HUSBAND. Yes, the man who lights up her life .

I woke up this morning watching my wife feed the litte princess and I was overwhelmed with a desire to logon and express my appreciation for all of you MOMs who are trying to Match this year.

I wish the AMA would give you extra credit towards the match for you all have to walk that extra mile, and in my opinion that extra mile could prove to be more beneficial in shaping you as good physicians than the double 99s and that USELESS research.

Yes, I know a thing or two about research, and I am not a Doctor so my opinion is quite objective .

GOOD LUCK to everyone and I wish that all of you are able to find a residency of your choice.

Regards,

Kykie: Regarding a decent fitting suit . . .listen - when I was 2 weeks away from giving birth, I was lucky to find a decent fitting T-shirt! You may want to try pants (or skirt) and a blouse instead. In the US, "Pea in the Pod" is a store at many malls. They have good quality clothing that looks well made. Its pretty expensive, though. They have stores online as well, but you may need to try things on to ensure a good fit, since its for an interview. Mimi maternity is also widely available and a little more affordable, but a little more casual and less "classy". If we don't hear from you soon, good luck with the new baby and with the interview!!!!!

Ujaala: I would try to phrase the answer in a way that makes it seem like you took time off in order to focus on starting a family and that you postponed entering into a residency program until you were confident that your family obligations would not interfere with your profesional responsibilities. As far as your 18 month old breast feeding baby - I am almost crying along with you (I breast fed my daughter until she was 21 months old). If you have no choice, then you have no choice. Your child will be fine - if he's well cared for and they talk to him about you and you call him on the phone alot, he will be perfectly happy. You, on the other hand, may need a lot of support (and some ice packs for your breasts). Log on when you miss him and cry to us.
