i would advice u to talk about fellowship goals in programs that brag about their residents gettiin fellowship after residency or programs that have in house fellowship.but if u are applyin to a community program, without fellowships, they might feel u wont b happy wiht them.

This is what got me confused at the first place kykie cos m applying just about everywhere and the smaller programs might think that my aspirations are way too high.so should i just leave it out and create something generic??

well what i did was to have a common personal statement, then, then all the places that have fellowships, i made adjustments, i.e i could say i am interested in hem onc if they have that fellowship. i wrote 1 personal statement but made adjustments to it, so i have 3 diff statements, dependin on if i am applyin to comm, comm with fellowship or a university

even community programs who do not have fellowship, like to tell yuo how many residenst got into fellowships elsewhere. If you want to pursue a specialty, I dont see any harm in one line in your PS telling about your goal. All programs are ACGME accredited, and if someone is interested in fellowship, it should not be a problem even if it is a commnuity place. Ofocurse Uni programs make a difference and so do your LOR's, performance, your visa status, research, PD's contacts and your specialty of choice for fellwoship.

For example: A high scorer in a Uni program on H1 visa may not get a fellowship in cardiology, where as a resident from a community place on H1/H1 visa may get into ID/ Endo/ Rheum and even Pul/Nephro fellowships. This si what I have seen in last couple of years.

If the programs are all from the same specialty no problem to send the same PS. If they are from different specialties you might need some changes depending on what you wrote on your PS because most of the time it includes an explanation of why did you decide to do that specialty and obviously that needs to be changed. If its general stuff use it for everyone it won't hurt you at all. I don't see why. Relax my friend it is all part of the show!! wink
