A 35 year old woman undergoes total hysterectomy because she already has her children and has multiple leiomyomas that are causing her chronic pelvic pain. Histologic sections through the ovary demonstrate multiple primary follicles, each containing an oocyte. These oocytes are arrested at which of the following stages of meiosis? a.-Anaphase b.-Interphase c.-Metaphase d.-Prophase e.-Telophase

D is the correct answer. Good job, hope4dabest. Until the preovulatory stage, the follicle contains a PRIMARY oocyte that is arrested in PROPHASE of meiosis I. During the late preovulatory stage, the oocyte continues meiosis and becomes a SECONDARY oocyte, arrested in METAPHASE II.
