Hello Friends, I and a few of my female friends are concerened about limited travel & transportation info. In a couple of months, we would be travelling hopefully. People from last year, if you would like to share info and your experience that would be great. So far my search is for the northeast area of USA. Instead of flying between nearby states you have options like peterpan buses, amtrak, greyhound but im not sure about the rates and if they are safe enough. Not many hospitals will provide/pay for accomodation so we have to look into that too. Best would be a relative or friend. Not many of us will be willing to rent a car in a new city so cabs will come in handy but can be really expensive. So plz share any information you guys have. Thank you.

if u know ur interview dates it wouldnt hurt to check air fares ... sometimes u can get cheaper fares than travelling by bus ! and its alot faster as well ... i know that last year most of my friends stayed with their seniors or friends of seniors when out for interviews ...but then almost all of em are guys ...

Hi goodluck usmle and doc holliday, I am from pakistan. The way i will be scheduling most iV's is within a certain window if the program permits. I will be in NY area from nove 15 onwards. i'm staying with cousin but ofcourse no one will pick me up and drop off to nearby states so i have looked into options like amtrak. A very good deal for People who are VISITORS in america( sorry not for citizens or residents) is by amtrak which basically provide unlimited travel within a 15 days period for just 299. check that out. ofcourse i cant take that so i'm relying on peterpan which basically goes to every nearby state. I am not considering flying between nearby states as programs can change last minute but airlines provide no refunds. Also you may get last minute IV's when God-like-double-99ers will cancel and we the lesser mortals will be happy to grab those. So for that i think bus will be a little better. But we still need recommendations from people frm last match. Goodluck.

sarika, some of my friends who had iv last year they went by bus ( peterpan and greyhound) between cities/states. Affordable prices and good conditions. Some of the hospitals offered accommodation ( you have to check with the hospital before the interview!) and dinner in the evening before iv. I hope you gonna buy a lot of bus tickets in this fall!

Hey goodluck usmle, take the metro to congress heights and anacostia stations in washington, D.C then walk down the martin luther king dr, you will know exactly what i'm talking abt! . Lol Just kidding! The above mentioned place is just an exception. Most of USA is much more safer than the areas we come from. When i spoke about relatives, i meant a place in any ONE of these cities where you can stay IN BETWEEN your interviews, like a permanent center place from where you will arrange your travel and IVs. Ofcourse not even brothers and sisters can drive u to IV's to another states, we have to find an efficient (read cheap) ways to travel alone. Goodluck.

Hey you guys.. Grey hound, peterpan and china town buses can come very handy when you are in northeast area. If you know your dates, you can book cheaper flights... US airways came in very great prices last year. Most FMGs interview in November Decemeber block, fares can get a little expensive in December. Amtrak is always a great option but keep in mind that you have to rest and have a good night sleep before interview. Good Luck you guys. Glad to be out of this circuit.

Amtrak is great because you can sleep on the train in a sleeper if it's on the right route!

you will be very lucky to get a companion for interviews in one region who has interviews with you. any particular concerns you have? It is generally safe if you travel woth amtrak. esp in daylight. Just travel light and try to be at your destination before dark. In NY look out for hotels in good areas.. there are a few shady places in NY, where I was not comfortable staying. May be staying in Manhattan and catching an early subway is a better idea. May be others can guide a little bit more.

ujaala ,it is almost impossible that you will get some female person travelling with you on the same dates ,on the same route and to the same program. I guess we have to be brave and travel on our own.Thank God some near by location my husband will drive me and stay with me in hotel,Which is a blessing for me.

well you can try ujaala, but every body doesnot get the same slot for interview. You can try posting on the web ,that you have interviews on this date and this location and if somebody is traveling the same route but ... ...............you can try if you want. Also most of the people who get interview calls are scheduling their interview slots now ,so they are not going to wait for somebody for travel reasons as interview slots fill pretty quickly and if you are too late , then the program just doesnot care if you want to come or not...I hope you understand how it works. I donot know if you are from U.S or Outside U.S ,but all the candidates travel from different states to different interview dates.I hope you understand. Also most of the hospitals are offering good accomodation for the night before interview, except those New Jersy or NY hospitals which interview in bulk and donot want to waste money on applicants. So donot worry too much, just take your interview slot and go for an interview, you will find a way to cope with it.Try clustering interviews of the same region together if you can. Try posting on other forums as well , your interview date or hospital and if there is a female who is traveling alone and needs a female partner might respond and then you will have your problem solved I am sure somebody will be looking for a female travel partner like you . Good luck
