Could anyone please guide me regarding pediatrics program in Maimonides. Do they offer prematch , if yes during what time of the year. Any more information about the program is most welcome. Thanks,

Hi win, Yes, I was able to schedule the IV yesterday after trying for almost a week.. And it is a decent program, Very busy. The pay is not good and it's NY. Around 20 positions, very busy. The area is safe, predominantly Jewish neighborhood. I have been there last year too.. But didn't match.. But one of the people with whom I attended th IV was offered a prematch. Have you got interviews from any other places?.. Good luck,

I'm a Maimo PGY1. Yes, the prog offers prematch (I'm actually a prematched resident). All I can say is we rotate in 3 hospitals (coney island, lutheran med center and maimo). Learning: you have everything here to become a great pediatrician. all you need is study. read read and read and you will have all the teaching and the clinical experience you need to be really good. working atmosphere: 99% of the attendings are really great, the chairman, the PD and his vice are very supportive. One of my colleague PGY1 who wanted to quit after 2 months because of family issue was sent on holiday "to meditate". The people that may be more difficult to deal with are your peers (the residents). But I can tell you that 90% of the resident here are great. 10% aren't but there is no perfect world. The next PGY1 will be lucky because my group has 99% great people and the actual PGY2 are 98% great people. Is it busy? it depends on the rotation and on the weeks. Every rotation is 4 weeks and you are on call every 4th day. In any rotation, you have one golden week-end, one friday call, one saturday call and one sunday call. the golden week end is the best coz you are on call on thursday (it means you work overnight), you are postcall on friday (you dont work) and you are free saturday and sunday. this means that the whole week you will work 50 to 55 hours which probably the lightest schedule in the whole united states. The saturday call sucks because you are postcall on sunday and you work on monday. this means that you will work 70 to 75 hours depending on the rotation, which is still nothing compared to 80 to 100 hours schedule you find in many residencies. when you are on call on friday or sunday, you work 60 to 65 hours. In most rotation you start at 7am and you leave at 4pm. Adolescent medicine sucks because you have to be at coney island by 5.30 am (wake up at 4.30 to 5 :eek . We are complaining about this crazy schedule. On the other hand when you do your outpatient clinic (3 months a year) you start at 9.30 and you are done by 4 pm sometimes even sooner. when you rotate in D§B, you work from 9am to 3 pm. The busiest rotations are maimo floor (number one) and Maimo nursery. when you go to coney island or lutheran, you gain a lot of autonomy and decision making possibilities. This is why is may good for you if you do your learnind at maimo and you practice outside. about interview: 26 spots for a very high number of applicants. just one hint: know where you are going.

I had no step 3 when they offered me prematch. I guess they took me because I was well informed about the program, I had a passed medical experience and more important, I was well prepared for the interview. This is the most important advice I can give here. Be confident but humble. your muscles must be relaxed. And while providing the most appropriate answers to the questions you are asked always remember that you are there for a job spot. So if they ask you about yourself or your country, remember that these questions, like all the other questions you will be asked can be converted to one: how can you demonstrate us that you can fit in with us? do they ask medical questions? well the interviewers here are many. I interviewed with the chairman and the PD and I was asked a medical question just because I put the input for that. I felt confident about discussing a topic so I oriented the conversation in that way. But this is not the reason why they took me. Here, as a PGY1, they dont expect you to know about peds coz they are sure that you will learn everything you need here.
