Hello all Vietnamese IMG,

I am Vietnamese IMG but I am still staying at Vietnam and have just passed Step 1 at Bangkok but low score. I think most of you faced some obstacles so much before the Match. I am so pleased to be right here along my peers Vietnamese IMGs to learn from your experience and focusing on reviewing Step 2 CK for good score. But I need your help as follow:

1--After taking Step 2 CK, I will show up at San Jose, CA. Is it easy to apply for Observership/Externship in local hospitals of San Jose personally in contact?
2--If I passed Step 2CK 90 above, low score Step 1, USCE for months. Is it feasible for IM residency?
3--Is this feasible to get B1/B2 visa under Step 2 CS setting for 6 months. I mean the US Consulate at Sai Gon will accept me like that?

Please help me, good buddies.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Thanh!
Answer your questions
1. It is not easy to find a position of extership in San Jose. For observership, I think you probably have if you have very close contacts with doctors who are working in their hospitals. As my experience, I was unable to find both kind of those positions in San jose where I am living nearby.

2. IM residency? yes, most of programs set their criteria for steps from 80 and over with first attempt.

3.For CS exam, 6 months is too generous enough for preparation. As the norm, people spend around from 20 days to 2 months for CSA. One of the most concern for CSA is the available date of exam. So if you are going to take CS, you should schedule at least 3 to 5 months earlier.

Good luck and welcome to the vietnamese docs threads.

Keep this thread going and good luck to you all!

To Thanh:
You could try contacting some community programs nearby San Jose since they are more likely to offer externship positions. GL!

Thanks a lot Lethru and Cozaar. Congratulation on 5 IVs, so great. What is going on your credentials and experience? You think the post-match is so hard to find a slot, I read another site told that soneone need efax.com when he/she was unmatched and he can make it. Good luck. If someone need his best mehtod, I will post here.

Hi Cozaar,
you think how much will I pay at San Jose externship for 3 months?

Hi lethru,

I mean I wanna take B1/B2 visa under Step 2 CS exam for 2 months and extension to 6 months for Step 3 exam and interview? Does it work?

Good luck
Thanh

Hi Thanh!

Sorry, I dont have any experience about the visa and step 3 preparation. Although i am ready for step 3,I do not start it yet. So dont know how long it will take. 2 months for step 2 CS i think is very good for full preparation.

Good luck in your steps preparation and visa acceptance.

  #21

Congrats Vietdoc and Lethru on interview invitations! It's still too early in the process. I'm sure there are more IVs waiting for uswink

Hi Thanh,
The fees involved in applying for an externship depend on the program. I am sorry I cannot tell you exactly the cost; you have to request that info from the program.
I think 1 month studying full-time for step 2 CS is more than sufficient. GL in your study prep!

Hi Vietnamese

When you go to the consulate, never let them know that you want to apply for the extension of you visa in US, if not you will have some trouble with them.

You have to say that after the exam you will come back the country for your job

Then it depends, thay can give you a single entrey or multiple entry visa for 1 month, 3 months, 6 months or even a year.

Then when you will be at the port of entry (ex airport) they will give you I94 which let you know how much time you can stay in US

If you want to stay over the time showed on I94, you have to apply extension to USCIS. Then we never know if they accept it or not. If they accept, it is good. If not you have to leave US as soon as you get their refusal

NB. sometime the female receptionists at the US consulate in saigon are nasty, but don't argue with them, if not they will tell something bad about you to the consular official, and you know that the male american will listen to the young lady there.

Hi all Vietnamese IMGs,

Thank you Phuluong2k so much for your strong advice. I have 2 more questions, please help me:

1--I am in Vietnam now, I am seeking Kaplan Lecture Notes USMLE Step 2 CK 2007 and my friend at San Jose can re-buy such Kaplan Lecture Notes at San Jose Kaplan Medical Center ? Does this work? ( I surfed on Ebay.com but it is so rough to get them in Vioetnam) or other ways please tell me.

2--It took me nearly 1 year and half for Passing Step 1 and of course I haven't been working in hospital any more since then, so it is difficult for me to get visa at General Consulate at Sai Gon? Please help me, good Vietnamese buddies.

Thank you in advance
Thanh

If you don't have a job in the country and go for the visa, so it is difficult to show the strong tie to the country. In my opinion, just work for a small health station in a small village then go for visa interview. Kaplan center don't sell the books alone, you have to go to the center

If you go to usmleforum.com, try to search, probably you will have download link for kaplan books
