I started thinking about USMLE last year and was told that I should finish all the exam before September. In the middle of my application, I heard that the USMLE certificate should be acquiredbefore Sept. Thus, I accelerated my study plan and finished all the test before August. In 10 months, I finished all the steps with 99/99/pass. Also, I started to observe in a clinic since June and accumulated 3 months of clinical experience.

I feel that my credentials are good. However, I really didn't do a good job applying. Last night, I finally sent out applications to 6 programs. The reason that I didn't send out more is because my personal statement was not reviewed by a native speaker yet. I just finished writing it myself and waiting for my American friend to find time correcting it. I got only one LOR early from the place where I observed. I asked for two other letters pnly last week, one was just sent out, another one may send it out next week. My medical school transcript was sent out in early September. The worst is that after I finally sent out the applications to the 6 programs, I realized that I didn't mention USCE in CAF. With so many things going on, it's just a messed-up time....

Do not worry.

I wrote PS myself too.

We are IMGs and PDs know that. Just make sure there is no grammar error.

Apply and prepare for IVs, then explain to them.

Good luck.

What I felt worse about is that I didn't get much of a chance to review CAF. I feel bad that I have prepared myself well with 3 months of clinical experience but there's no where to show on my CV. I should definately have asked for recommendation letters earlier. I was procrastinating on that because I thought those professors didn't know me well. However, everyone agreed to write when I asked. One person asked me: but isn't the application start already? I feel bad.

put your USCE in your personal statement, the battle isn't over yet. don't give up! as for the lors, gotta wait....

Thanks medicus, I feel better now. I did put some sentences in my PS, and hopefully one LOR will mention it too. Now I can only keep my fingures crossed.

hey salaan, you have no reason to feel bad. It's part of the rough and tumble world of the USMLEs for us IMGs. Sometimes you slip up because there is so much you have to do. You managed to get through the exams in time and score really well. Great job on that. Your scores will go a very long way, so don't worry about your CAF. You'll do great so keep ur spirits up.

salaan, medicus is right. the battle is only just begun. write your USCE in PS and apply to programs as soon as u get the letters. last year even those who applied in mid-oct did quite well in the Match....esp those who didnt have visa requirements.
instead of feeling sad over your already submitted CAF, go ahead and prep up for the interviews, which will be pouring in for you, no doubt wink

Hey Salaan,
Good work with 99s and USCE- I think many programs will figure it out from your LoRs Dont worry too much about it now man- Just modify your PS and apply widely- esp to programs that dont require USCE compulsorily- there are lots of good programs-
Remember as one of the seniors put it- This is a MARATHON- the fact that you are bit later in the line doesnt matter but the whole long race is ahead of you- I think a lot of programs willbe impressed by your double 99s- dont lose hope even before the race has started!
