Categorical is the 3 year (or 4) program which includes complete training till the boards.

Preliminary year is the one year of IM or Surgery required to complete before starting residency in some specialities like neuro and optho, derma, radio to name a few.

Transitional year is one year IM training involving lots of elective rotations to give you idea od working in different fields to later on choose a field. May or maynot count towards your later training for the board depending upon requirements of the specialty and what electives you did in your transitional.

Transitional is NOT internal medicine training - it is a different program, rotating in different fields.

There are much better chances that you will get categorical than that you will get prelim. Unless you need prelim for some other programs you are applying (like neuro) forget about it. Apply to categorical if medicine is what you want.
