Dear Dr. Fischer, How much does clinical experience count? esp clinical experience in UK/residency in home country? Is this an important factor in screening for interview calls or only later during deciding the RoL? How does this compare with Research experience? What do you suggest for a candidate without recent clinical experience?

Greetings Seeking of Knowledge!! 1. Timing of interviews: If you go EARLY you should stay in contact with the program so they remember you. Include a PICTURE Of you with correspondance so they remember you. 2. COUPLES MATCH: This is Definitely harder. It is like getting two seats together in a crowded plane. I would NOT make a big deal of it. Also, many programs do NOT like to have a couple, Then scheduling is a bigger problem. Also, if one of you is a problem, it is like having two people as a problem 3. Convincing each program THEY are the one you are interested in. Recruiting is like looking for an arranged marriage. Give each person the feeling they are the ONLY one you want. People like that. Try to find SOMETHING special about each place so you can ask about it. Also, go EARLY and ask them "What is the thing you are most PROUD of here? What is your FAVORITE part of being here?" Then you can respond and use this with people at the same place later in the same interview. 4. Medical Assistant Experience DEFINITELY counts as US experience. Actually it is great! 5. Spanish language ability is a HUGE advantage. Hispanic is the LARGEST minority in the United States. It is a big advantage in Florida, California and New York.\ Wishing you well!!!! You are in a sacred endeavor. Warmly, The Fisch

Ah yes!!! 1. You DO look ambivalent if you apply in BOTH preliminary and categorical. Make it clear which you prefer if you get there. You are trying for BOTH programs and would like to be ranked in both, otherwise, they may only rank ONE. Categorical is EASIER. In preliminary you are competing against high functioning US graduates going into radiology, derm, ophtho and emergency medicine categorical is easier. 2. For "tolito" who is anxious about surgery. I would definitely applyin medicine as a backup. The other BIG issue for you is whether you would take a one year preliminary spot, and try AGAIN for categorical surgery. Preliminary surgery is easy and can result in categorical surgery if you work. 3. For mr. "I come from a small school" How would they know unless you tell them? Tell them you are from the "Harvard" of your country. 4. Research: It helps, but they only see it AFTER you have been chosen for an interview. Wishing you all well! Sri Conrad Fischerji

Hello Dr Fisch. I'm another big fan of yours. My question is, I am 9 months pregnant and i have an interview this friday should i talk about my pregnancy, even if it isnt raised i.e use it as an asset to my advantage by telling the program, i am so interested in them , that i defied all odds to come for the interview. Basically, i want to be considered as every1 else,i would prefer to be ranked on how well i do at the interview, and not below others because i am pregnant. Thank you, your advice is appreciated

thanks PGI 2 alpha. the thing is some programs like to shy away from people with families, because they feel your attention during resdiency would be divided. I have even heard of some programs asking interns if they plan to have children during their residency[which is illegal to ask by the way]

Dr. Fischer, Why are programs so reluctant to take older grads ..... almost like marrying a much older woman?? I can understand that if an applicant has not been doing anything medicine related, its not reflected well. But some programs just filter applicants based on graduation dates, even if the applicant is pursuing an MPH or PhD. Is there any benefit to emailing the PD and drawing his attention to one's application? Thanks.

Dear Dr. Fishcher, I have one questions regarding reapplicant candidate. Will the program know the one who has more than one time participating in macthing? If PD ask what went wrong last year withb such a good score. (mid 90s two steps and step3= mid80s plus US experience, cs attempt though) but, I wasn t ranked in the top 3 in my classes but you know time change people change so I tried hard to get a good usmle score. What would be the answer you would recommend to handle that question? Appreciate your time answering my questions. Thanks Siam126

Dr. Fischer I've been told that one can apply to 2 specialties at the same hospital, eg. applying to surgery and having internal med as a fall back. Is it true that this is possible and that those programs cant find out that your applying at the same hospital for 2 different residencies?? Do you or anybody out there have any facts on this, or what have you heard? Thanx!

Hey Dr Fisherji, Seems u have an Indian soul! My question is 1)do candidates get quizzed on medical questions during their interviews? 2)Is MSPE a dire requirement? My school does not provide it .
